The inaugural coin collecting product released by the United States Mint this year is its annual silver proof set with all the latest America the Beautiful Quarters.
Introduced Tuesday, January 8, the 2013 America the Beautiful Quarters Silver Proof Set is available for $41.95 and includes:
- 90% silver White Mountain National Forest Quarter,
- 90% silver Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial Quarter,
- 90% silver Great Basin National Park Quarter,
- 90% silver Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine Quarter, and
- 90% silver Mount Rushmore National Memorial Quarter.
These America the Beautiful Quarters honor the respective national sites found in New Hampshire, Ohio, Nevada, Maryland and South Dakota. Designs of the coins were first revealed by the U.S. Mint late last year.
Each quarter has a ‘S’ mint mark signifying production at the United States Mint facility in San Francisco. Struck for collectors in proof quality, the coins have sharp reliefs and mirror-like backgrounds. Collectively, they have a silver weight of 0.904 troy ounces, bringing the set’s silver melt value to $27.41 at the silver spot price of $30.31 an ounce.
New packaging holds the coins. Like past years, they are in the same style plastic lens with a black background. New is the outer box, which includes an image on the front of White Mountain National Forest. On the back are images of each national site honored this year, along with their names, when they were established and the states.
Only one other coin collecting product this year is known to have the same silver quarters, the 2013 Silver Proof Set scheduled to launch in May for $67.95. This set also has a 90% silver Kennedy half-dollar and 90% silver dime, plus standard clad proofs of the five dollar coins, nickel and cent.
Last year the U.S. Mint issued its 2012 Limited Edition Silver Proof Set. It also has the year’s 90% silver quarters, the silver dime and the silver half-dollar, plus a proof American Silver Eagle. There has not been an indication from the Mint that it will offer a 2013 Limited Edition Silver Proof Set.
This latest coin collecting set is available from the U.S. Mint online store at catalog.usmint.gov. There are no per household ordering limits. Collector demand determines mintages.
