The United States Mint increased prices on more than a dozen platinum and gold collector coins on Wednesday, February 1, in response to higher precious metals.
Each Wednesday the Mint averages the London Fix price of gold and also platinum from the previous Thursday to the current Wednesday to determine whether coins containing those metals should have their prices adjusted.
Since January 25, the range the United States Mint had been using to base its pricing on collector platinum coins was an average for platinum that fell between a range of $1,450.00 - $1,549.99 an ounce. On Wednesday, February 1, however, the average equaled $1,610.88 so it jumped up into the next bracket.
As for gold, the range that the Mint was using was $1,650.00 to $1,699.99 per ounce. But like platinum, gold had been on a run for several days, and the Wednesday morning average came to $1,729.27 and the range changed to $1,700.00 - $1,749.99 an ounce. Those moves for platinum and gold initiated the following adjustments:
