Sales of Yosemite National Park Quarters Three-Coin Set began strong compared to earlier sets, and the Medal of Honor Commemorative Coins maintained a steady pace with a cumulative advance of 37,317. In addition, bullion American Silver Eagles opened the new month with enough force to break 10 million in annual sales.
The United States Mint launched the Yosemite Three-Coin Set for on Thursday, March 3, and within four days sold 11,441 of them. Earlier sets featuring Hot Springs National Park and Yellowstone National Park opened at 10,684 and 11,115 in their first five days.
The proof Medal of Honor Silver Dollar coin shot up 22,788 in this week's report, making it the best individual coin performer. Its uncirculated version climbed 9,962. The $5 proof and uncirculated gold commemoratives increased by 3,345 and 1,222.
The 2011 Proof Set outperformed the other sets by a clear margin. It leaped by 36,785. The closest performer was the 2011 Mint Set, with a climb of 13,295, and the 2011 Presidential $1 Proof Set, which added 11,811.
The 2010 America the Beautiful Quarters Silver Proof Set unexpectedly dropped by -129. The set has recently been in the news for its silver content, and it is currently unavailable as US Mint officials consider the rising trend of silver's market value. The biggest surprise that came from the latest sales figures, however, was the comeback of Mount Hood's quarter. For weeks its 100-coin bags had been selling in double digits and its two roll sets in triple digits, but this time the two-roll set catapulted by 17,334 and the 100-coin bags from Philadelphia and Denver erupted by 2,658 and 2,622.
US Mint bullion American Silver Eagles started March with 668,500. It was enough to move annual sales beyond the 10 million marker and end up at 10,330,500. Only 67 days in the year has passed, and 2011 already ranks fifth in highest sales for the series.
