Bullion American Silver Eagles stood out as compared to slipping numismatic sales at the United States Mint. The Silver Eagles climbed higher toward another annual record while collector sets and coins weakened and slowed.
US Mint bullion American Silver Eagles added 748,500 to their March total, bringing it to 1,417,000. With it, annual sales treaded lightly beyond the 11 million milestone. 2011 moved from fifth place to fourth place for highest annual sales in the series with nine months remaining in the year. Its total had landed at 11,079,000.
Every US Mint collector set lost speed. The best seller was the 2011 Proof Set, which rose by 24,133. Its previous addition had been 36,785. Second best was a close race between the 2010 Silver Proof Set with a gain of 5,479 and the 2011 Mint Set's increase of 5,254.
The 2010 America the Beautiful Quarters Silver Proof Set lost sales again, this time by retreating -230. In the last report it had dropped -129. Some of the other items that ended down were Mount Hood Quarter bags and rolls, Gettysburg Quarter bags and rolls, and 2010 Native American Dollar rolls. Falling totals may be the result of returns, cancellations, and inventory corrections.
The standout in the commemorative coin arena was the Medal of Honor Silver Dollar Proof. It leaped by 8,190. The uncirculated strike picked up 2,954. $5 proof and uncirculated gold Medal of Honor commemoratives edged up 1,158 and 444.
US Army commemorative gold coins did not advance as fast. The proofs grew by 263 and its uncirculated by 117. The Army Silver Dollar led with 2,720 proof and 808 uncirculated. Clad versions followed the silver with gains of 1,171 and 1,049. respectively.
