2011 Medal of Honor Commemorative Coins

The United States Mint launched seven new coin products last week, but only one of them landed in the three spots among the best numismatic sellers for the week.

The top three performers were the 2011 Presidential $1 Coin Proof Set, the 2011 Proof Set, and the 2011 Mint Set. Bullion Silver Eagles flew off the Mint shelves too and closed out February with a new record.

US Mint bullion Silver Eagles finished February at 3,240,000 and became the new "Best February" for the series. To get there, Authorized Purchasers bought 640,500 of the coins since last Tuesday. The previous record holder was February 2009 with a cool 1,115,000. Combining last month with January's "All-Time Monthly Record", the year-to-date sales rung in at 9,662,000.

The 2011 Presidential $1 Proof Set debuted with 163,129 between their release on Tuesday, February 22, and Sunday, February 27, 2011. Their inaugural sales were much slower than last year's issue, which started at 224,426 from their February 11 launch date to February 14, 2010. To the older set's credit, it had President Abraham Lincoln's $1 which turned out to be very popular among collectors. This year's set honors Presidents Andrew Johnson, Ulysses S. Grant, Rutherford B. Hayes and James Garfield.

The second best seller was the 2011 Proof Set, and it plowed forward another 54,960. The previous week was much higher with 78,551. Still, its total sales cleared the half million marker in this report and advanced to 528,580.

The ever popular 2011 Mint Set rounded out the top three with a gain of 30,520, which was much better than the 20,053 gain in the prior round. It has been available for three weeks.

The other four Medal of Honor coins and two Johnson dollar newcomers did very well on the charts. They were:

  • Medal of Honor Commemorative $5 Gold Proof Coin, 4,699 sold
  • Medal of Honor Commemorative $5 Gold Uncirculated Coin, 1,890 sold
  • Medal of Honor Commemorative $1 Silver Proof Coin, 25,156 sold (fourth place)
  • Medal of Honor Commemorative $1 Silver Uncirculated Coin, 10,346 sold
  • Andrew Johnson $1 Coin Roll (Philadelphia), 23,211 sold
  • Andrew Johnson $1 Coin Roll (Denver), 22,523 sold

Combined across each production option, 42,091 Medal of Honor coins were sold. In that sense, the coins would actually take the number three spot as the most popular numismatic items of the week.

The first three columns of the table below provide weekly US Mint sales increases between the listed time periods, offering a sense of recent trends. The final column provides the latest US Mint sales totals as of Sunday, February 27, 2011. Bullion coin tables are found toward the bottom, with the most recent sales as of Tuesday, March 1.
