Demand for gold coins improved while 2012-W Proof Silver Eagles kept up their steady lead in weekly U.S. Mint sales.
2012-W Proof Silver Eagles led U.S. Mint sales
Updated stats showed 51 coin collecting products improved over their prior week’s increases, compared to 58 overachievers in the previous report. 11 in this round contained gold and another 10 items were silver.
Always the classic purchase, collectors eagerly ordered 11,699 Proof Silver Eagles from West Point, which was up from the 9,542 bought during the prior week. Proof Silver Eagles are usually a popular coin collecting product whenever a brand-new item is not launching. Since nothing debuted between August 20 and 24, the Eagles easily kept their spot at number one among the top sellers.
The 2012 Proof Set and 2012 Silver Proof Set rounded out the top three spots. 8,299 Proof Sets sold while only 3,564 Silver Proof Sets were taken.
Part of what helped gold coins was the attention that gold was getting for its growing trading price. Early in the week, gold was around $1,615 an ounce but by Friday, August 24, it rose to $1,667 an ounce. When a change that drastic takes place, it seems as though the U.S. Mint sells more gold coins. The top numismatic gold sellers were the one ounce 2012 Proof Gold Eagle and the 2012 Proof Buffalo. 554 Eagles and 253 Buffalo coins sold in this round versus 100 and 140 coins respectively in the prior round.
