US Mint Sales: Hot Springs Silver Coin Sold Out, Unc. Gold Eagle Debuts

2010-P Hot Springs Silver Coin

Earlier Thursday, orders for last week's hot ticket item, the 2010-P Hot Springs National Park Five Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coin, reached its maximum.

The silver coins were released on April 28, and 26,866 sold as of Sunday, May 8. The final 134 were scooped up in the last few days, causing the US Mint to instigate their "waiting list" so that any Hot Spring orders that are canceled can still be sold on a first-in, first-served basis.

In other US Mint sales news, one annual set dominated recent collector attention and pushed the debuting Mount Hood Quarter Three-Coin Set to second place in US Mint product sales. The other new items that arrived on the scene were not nearly as popular.

The 2011 Proof Set racked up 11,363 new sales while the Mount Hood Quarter Three-Coin Set opened with 11,282. That is not bad considering the Mint's Proof Set will likely cross the one million marker before the year is finished. The three-coin set series can hardly compete with it.

Other newcomers include the Uncirculated Gold Eagle and the Eliza Johnson First Spouse Gold Coins. Inaugural sales seemed soft, and high gold prices might have been the turn-off factor. The US Mint sold 1,098 uncirculated Gold Eagles, 1,331 Eliza Johnson proof coins, and 777 Eliza Johnson uncirculated coins.

As for unusual US Mint sales, Andrew Johnson $1 Coin Rolls catapulted by 8,274 after diving by -7,654 in the last round. As of late, the Presidential $1 Coin rolls experience either single or small double digit sales gains. Another oddity was the Presidential $1 Coin Covers. Only 2 out of 9 available rose, but lately they had been rising by 10 or more each. Lastly, the Mint has yet to report on the debuting figures for the 2011 Presidential $1 Coin Uncirculated Set, which launched on April 27.

Only a few bullion coins outperformed their prior sales. The popular Silver Eagles advanced another 720,000 since last week, after leaping 701,000 previously. The one ounce Gold Eagles climbed by 50,000 compared to 34,500 in the prior round.

It should be noted the bullion Gettysburg and Glacier America the Beautiful 5 ounce Silver Coins together rose by 12,600 to hit 250,400 of the maximum minted 253,000 as of Tuesday, May 10.
