The first December US Mint sales report is in and with it the debut figures of three recently released collector products:
- 2009 American Platinum Eagle Proof,
- Margaret Taylor First Spouse Gold Coin, and
- CNMI Northern Mariana Islands
quarters bags and rolls
The 2009 proof Platinum Eagles are moving fast with what looks to be a sell out in the very near future. 7,207 of the available 8,000 are gone as of Sunday, Dec. 6. The price for the 99.95 percent pure platinum coin is currently $1,792.00, with an order limit in place of five per household. Given that the eagles are the only platinum option available from the Mint this year -- no bullion versions, fractional sizes, etc. -- these coins could be sold out by week's end.
Like the eagles, Margaret Taylor First Spouse Gold Coins went on sale Dec. 3. Initial figures are showing that collectors purchased 1,791 of the proofs and 1,048 of the uncirculated options for respective prices of $754 and $741. The coins are the thirteenth in a series of commemoratives designed to honor former first ladies of the United States, and the last of 2009. Each contains 1/2 ounces of 24-karat, .9999 fine gold.
Closing out the "new" category are bags and rolls of Northern Mariana Islands
quarters. These launched on Monday, Nov. 30, which was the day after the last US Mint sales report came out. As such, the opening sales include a full week's history. The coins are the final issue in the DC & US Territories Quarters Program. They are also the most scarce quarters in decades.
On Tuesday collectors learned that 72,800,000 Northern Mariana Islands quarters were produced, with 35.2 million of those struck in Philadelphia and 37.6 million at Denver. That represents just 42.2 percent of the mintage totals for this year’s first issued DC quarter. For their latest sales figures, refer to the tables below.
There were two US Mint sets that topped the 600,000 milestone this week:
- The 18-coin Silver Proof Set jumped up 14,845 to reach 606,112
- The Presidential $1 Coin Proof Set added another 6,166 to hit 605,088
As a reminder, all United States Mint product options for commemorative Braille Silver Dollars will go off sale on Dec. 11 at 5:00 PM ET. The silver coins celebrate the bicentennial birth of Louis Braille, who is most remembered for inventing the Braille system for reading and writing by the blind and visually impaired. The National Federation of the Blind (NFB) receives $10 for each Bicentennial Braille coin sale in order to further its programs to promote Braille literacy.
The latest numbers show that a total of 217,874 proof and uncirculated coins have been scooped up by collectors. That is a fairly solid success for a commemorative program. However, the coins will not achieve a sell out since they have an authorized mintage of 400,000.
The following table lists US Mint sales stats. The first three columns provide weekly increases between the listed time periods, offering a sense of recent trends. The final column provides the latest totals for US Mint coin products, as of Sunday, Dec. 6, 2009.
