The United States Mint added one more product to their latest sales figures, the 2011 America the Beautiful Quarters Proof Set. It and a few other annual sets sparked new life back into slumping sales.
The annual America the Beautiful Quarters Proof Set opened earlier and with lower numbers than its companion 2010 quarters set. The US Mint issued it Thursday, March 17, and by Sunday, March 20, the set debuted at 53,944. Although it was the best numismatic seller of the week, last year's set opened on May 27, 2010 and within the same four day window sold 73,756.
One of the best comebacks on the chart was the 2011 Silver Proof Set. It went from a gain of 3,440 in the last round to a surge of 25,940 in this one. Perhaps collectors speculated that a price increase was coming as happened Friday to the 2010 Silver Proof Set and the 2010 America the Beautiful Quarters Silver Proof Set. The 2011 Silver Proof Set total ended up at 325,200 after being on the market for approximately seven weeks.
Other standouts were the 2011 Proof Set, the Mount Hood Quarters Two-Roll Sets, and the First Spouse Gold Coins. The half ounce 24 karat coins' cumulative sales jumped from 336 to 968.
Commemorative sales may have gotten slower as the weeks have passed but they are still strong contenders for collectors' pockets. A total of 9,819 Medal of Honor Commemorative Coins sold and 4,539 of the US Army Commemoratives. Their silver proof versions have remained the strongest. Each advanced by 5,772 and 2,069 respectively.
American Silver Eagles climbed another 652,500 to make their March total hit 2,069,500. Their previous increase had been 748,500. Less than 10 days are left in the month, and with the extreme popularity of the investment grade coins, the three million monthly sales milestone still seems possible.

The final column provides the latest US Mint sales totals as of Sunday, March 20, 2011. Bullion coin tables are found toward the bottom, with the most recent sales as of Wednesday, March 23.
