US Mint Sales: 2010-P Hot Springs Silver Coin Debut

The highs and lows in this week's sales report include the new five ounce uncirculated 2010-P Hot Springs Silver Coin that pounced on the scene with a near sell out and the retreating annual silver sets.

Proof Gold Eagles held on to some of their previous week's launch momentum, and the commemorative coins surged.

The hot number of the week was the new 2010-P Hot Springs silver coin. Even though the concept of a five ounce duplicate of the new quarter-dollar series received mixed reviews from many numismatists early -- some loved it while others hated it, the lovers picked up approximately 25,000 of the available 27,000 in the first five days. The coins were released on April 28.

Proof Gold Eagles were the second top seller with 9,437 individual coins and 1,557 of the Four-Coin sets selling. When each coin in the set is added together with the individuals, the total comes to 15,665 Gold Eagles on the street. The one ounce coin led the group with 4,090. The quarter ounce coin was the only one to outperform its debuting figure. 1,540 quarter ounce eagles sold during the first full week versus 1,313 selling during the inaugural four days.

Every Medal of Honor commemorative and every US Army commemorative exceeded their prior sales in this round. In all, the US Mint sold 6,668 Medal of Honor coins and 4,567 US Army coins compared to 5,957 and 3,324 previously.

The biggest loser in the group was the Andrew Johnson $1 Coin Roll Sets struck in Philadelphia. Its US Mint sales total tumbled -7,654, which is unusual for the 25-coin rolls. In the prior report, it had gained 313. A few of the other products that lost ground were the 2011 America the Beautiful Quarters Silver Proof Set, which fell by -70, and the 2011 Silver Proof Set, with -54 on the week.

Bullion coin sales were mixed. The popular Silver Eagles advanced another 701,000 since last week, after leaping 718,000 previously. The two overachievers of the group were the one ounce and the half ounce Gold Eagles. Their totals climbed by 34,500 and 17,000 respectively. In the prior round they picked up 22,500 and 4,000.
