Buyers continue to order large quantities of bullion coins from the United States Mint, according to the closing June 2010 coin sales figures.
The month turned out to be the best ever June for American Silver Eagles, and the sixth best in monthly sales since the series was introduced in 1986. Just over 3 million were purchased, marking the fourth time in 2010 the level was breached.
Year to date sales through the first six months are at an amazing 18,168,500, which already accounts for 63.1 percent of the annual record of 28,766,500 set in 2009. The unprecedented rate of sales adds further worries that the 2010 collector versions of the American Silver Eagle -- the proof and uncirculated -- will not get minted again, as happened in 2009. The eagles were notably in the "To Be Determined" column in the recently updated Mint product schedule.
The following table provides a quick glimpse of US Mint bullion sales, with the first column listing total coins sold in June and the final column providing the year to date tally, also in coins sold.

Bullion 22 karat American Gold Eagles were off to the races as well. Combining all the fractional sizes and the one ounce, the U.S. Mint sold 151,500 gold ounces of the coins in June. It was the second best month -- after May 2010 -- since 1999 when the Y2K scare was a boon for gold. For more details, read US Mint Gold Eagle June 2010 Sales from sister site CoinNews.
As mentioned in the CoinNews article, the 2010 fractional Gold Eagles "supplemented" sales with their June 10, 2010 launch. The most affordable 1/10 oz size have already topped the 260,000 sold in 2008 and in 2009. The 1/2 oz and 1/4 oz sizes started quick, but have since moved sluggishly with their current levels unchanged since June 24.
The 24 karat American Buffalo Gold bullion coins moved slower in June. The 33,500 is less than half of the 70,500 sold in May and under the 56,500 that left US Mint inventories during the final days of April. 48,500 alone were purchased on their April 29 release.
