The United States Mint has been making changes to its website at www.usmint.gov, adding new product search features and better highlighting its coin collecting products to improve the user experience.
On the home page, the U.S. Mint added its Customer Service phone number and made the Search feature more prominent. Pictures of products have been rotating in the center for some time, but now a new image highlights the website changes with an option to take a visual tour.
The visual tour at http://www.usmint.gov/websiteinfo/2012/improvements illustrates some of the updates with "call outs" in bright green that accentuate the alterations and additions on four different areas of the Mint’s website. A few of the minor ones have already been mentioned for the home page, but others include a section for recent coin catalogs that have been mailed and a new e-mail updates page.
There are a couple of ways to get to the new pages, and one of the easiest is from the online store page — just click the Shop button near the center on the home page. Visitors will find Product Search and Price Search, new features, along the left margin. At the top of the right margin is a button to "Get product updates by e-mail." The center of the catalog page is reserved for a featured coin products, followed by an announcements section.
In related news, but not the result of the new website changes, customers placing product orders Monday morning through the U.S. Mint’s online store received a security certificate warning. The U.S. Mint provided this statement to explain:
Beginning the morning of Oct 1, 2012, customers began receiving a warning message regarding the United States Mint’s Web site security certificate when placing an online order. Our security certificate had expired, and this was the reason for the warning.
We were able to update the security certificate by 1:00 p.m. Our site certificate had not been compromised, nor had any other part of our site or any customer information. The United States Mint Web site continued to be a secure method for obtaining our products during this period. For those customers who placed their order online during the period of the expired certificate, please be assured your information is secure and your order will be processed. We apologize for any inconvenience customers may have experienced.
Collectors should expect more website updates down the road. The Mint indicates the changes are getting made based on customer feedback.
