Sales were a mixed bag when it came to US Mint bullion coins in June 2011. Levels retreated for each of the major offerings, but that is normal for a summer month. The mixing is in terms of their recent performances, and how silver bullion coins continue to shine.
American Silver Eagles scored their best June with sales of 3.402 million coins while American Gold Eagles plunged in June with sales of 61,500 ounces. How the bullion coins performed against the previous month of May is telling. Silver Eagle sales in June dropped just 6.9% from May while Gold Eagles plunged 42.5% over the same time.
Silver Eagle bullion coins remain on a record-setting pace with six-month sales of 22.3035 million. Double that amount and more than 44 million will be sold this year. The current annual record was hit in 2010 at a lower 34.6625 mullion. Six-month sales for the 22-karat Gold Eagle bullion coins are at 576,000 ounces. The level is far from shabby, but doubling it results in a total that is lower than their 2010 annual sales of 1.22205 million ounces.
