The latest United States Mint sales report has flavors of uneventful and declining numbers like those seen from last week. There are a few products that emerged from the dust, however.
First, the Lincoln One Cent Proof Set has been removed from the US Mint's online store. The set which contains the four redesigned 2009 Lincoln pennies are now listed as "sold out." The cents are specially composed of 95% copper, 3% zinc and 2% tin, or the same alloy as the original 1909 cent. The latest tally stands at 201,107 sold.
Demand picked up by about 2.3x for proof 2009 American Buffalo Gold Coins and by about 3.2x for Ultra High Relief Gold Coins. No doubt helping were their $50 price cuts on Dec. 16. Despite gold prices that continue to fall, a price reduction is unlikely for the gold coins this week. As a reminder, UHR sales stop on Dec. 31 and 3:00 PM ET.
Proof and mint sets all declined again, with the exception of the 2008 Annual Uncirculated Dollar Coin Set. It is the only way to purchase an uncirculated American Silver Eagle directly from the Mint -- albeit the 2008-dated version -- since the 2009s were canceled.
Taylor Coin & First Spouse Medal Set sales debuted this week. They went on sale Thursday, Dec. 18. Collectors purchased 2,702 by Sunday.
In a note worth mentioning, Northern Mariana Islands quarters in 1,000-coin bags from Philadelphia are moving much faster than their Denver counterpart with respective 1,293 and 663 sales. Past quarter sales of the bags have been generally much closer. The Northern Mariana Island quarter-dollars are now officially the scarcest of all 2009 quarters, or of any of the 50 State Quarters for the matter. The 2009-P's have the lowest mintage of any quarter in decades, explaining collector's extra interest in them.
