The latest United States Mint report on collector coin sales is a bit more exciting than last week. Sales increased across more products, albeit slightly. Also, while US Mint annual sets had the largest numbers, their combined totals declined yet again.
The 2009 Mint Set and 2009 Proof Set -- the two most popular US Mint set offerings -- each declined in sales. The former came in with a weekly increase of 10,351 compared to 10,817. The latter showed a gain of 8,946 versus 11,269.
Other annual sets showed improvements, although not to the levels that were seen in early December. Worth noting, the 2009 Presidential Uncirculated Dollar Coin Set topped 100,000.
In a surprising stat simply because they are still available, numbers for the 2008 Annual Uncirculated Dollar Coin Set improved nicely, jumping 1,221 versus the prior 809. The set is the only way to purchase an uncirculated American Silver Eagle from the Mint. It is 2008-dated, however. The Mint canceled 2009 Silver Eagle coins for collectors and the new year coins are not yet on the 2010 US Mint schedule.
First Spouse Gold Coins logged solid gains. As a group, weekly sales picked up by 330. Last week's report showed a disappointing total gain of only 113. The week prior had increases at 506.
2010 sales of 2009-dated American Eagle Gold Bullion Coins are off to a sluggish start with 2,000 sold since the 1st. The New Year's holiday certainly has not helped. Silver Eagles are performing better with their 107,500 increase. 2010-dated bullion one-ounce coins will be available beginning on Jan. 19.
