The latest United States Mint sales figures show a healthy increase in buying activity for bullion 2009 American Eagles during the last seven days, but a less than exciting week -- the third straight -- for collector products.
Bullion 1 oz 2009 American Gold Eagles, which are being rationed as a result of short supply, added another 44,500 for a year-to-date total of 1,300,500. These coins just came off their most recent sales suspension two weeks ago (December 15).
The fractional 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz and 1/10 oz sizes are no longer available, which limits buyer choices and is likely helping the 1 oz coins to some degree. (For more, read Fractional Gold Eagle Sell Out Figures.) Last week the US Mint announced that it would offer 2010 Gold Eagles on Jan. 19.
2009 American Silver Eagles enjoyed one of their better weeks of the year. The bullion coins are also being rationed. Still, the numbers rose sharply by 837,500. They now have a new all-time annual high of 28,680,500. In related news, the US Mint also said it would offer 2010 Silver Eagles on Jan. 19.
Turning the corner, demand for the vast majority of numismatic products declined in the latest round of figures. Only a tiny handful of coins improved when compared to the prior week's numbers.
Given that the latest reporting period is from Dec. 21 to Dec. 27, the declines are hardly an unexpected anomaly, however. With the holiday break and associated order deadlines for Christmas time deliveries already expired, collectors had less reasons to place orders and more reasons to relax.
Two Presidential Dollar and Medal Sets were adjusted significantly. The Polk $1 Coin and Medal Set dropped by 571 to fall back down to 7,772 while the John and Julia Tyler Coin and Medal Set jumped up 806 to 8,449. Last week's report showed that the same Tyler set fell by 615.
