Activity picked up in August for gold and silver bullion coins produced by the United States Mint.
Sales of U.S. Mint bullion coins rallied in August 2012.
Solid month-over-month gains were made across all U.S. Mint bullion products — American Eagle gold bullion coins, American Eagle silver bullion coins, American Buffalo gold bullion coins and America the Beautiful Five Ounce Silver Bullion Coins.
In 22-karat gold coins, U.S. Mint distributors purchased 39,000 ounces of Gold Eagles in August compared to 30,500 ounces in July. However, demand was significantly stronger one year ago as August 2011 registered sales of 112,000 ounces.

In 24-karat gold coins, Buffalo coin sales jumped from 4,000 in July to 9,000 in August. But demand for them was also greater last year at this time with August 2011 sales at 28,000.

In American Eagle silver bullion coins, demand was sharply higher with sales last month at 2.87 million compared to the prior month’s 2.278 million. The month came in as the second best August ever. However, and once again, sales were lower than last year this time when U.S. Mint distributors ordered 3.402 million Silver Eagles.

In wrapping up bullion coins, sales improved for a fourth consecutive month for the Mint’s America the Beautiful Five Ounce Silver Bullion Coins. Buyers ordered 19,400 of the coins compared to the previous month’s 18,700. The monthly total is the best so far for 2012.
