ANA World’s Fair of Money: Day 1 - Coin Collector’s Blog

It was a very long day in Baltimore. After driving for over an hour, I finally made it to the Baltimore Convention Center and started to feed pictures and text to Twitter and Photobucket. I hope those who followed enjoyed the updates. I know there were some time gaps between Tweets, but I needed to take time to do my own searching! Also, connection issues prevented a few pictures from uploading. But it was fun.

US Mint shows 2009 Ultra High Relief Double Eagle gold coin and gold bars

DIRECTOR OPENS EXHIBIT OF GENUINE GOLD BARS AND THE MOST BEAUTIFUL COIN EVER CREATED

BALTIMORE
- The United States Mint chose the Nation’s largest coin show in Baltimore this summer to provide a “golden moment” for visitors by unveiling the much-anticipated 2009 Ultra High Relief Double Eagle Gold Coin, a modern version of what many call the most beautiful gold coin ever created:  the 1907 Double Eagle.  The exhibit at the United States Mint booth displays the development of this modern masterpiece, from its origin as gold bars through test strikes, to the finished, one-ounce 24-karat (.9999 pure) 2009 Ultra High Relief Double Eagle Gold Coin.

Six bars of refined gold stored at the United States Mint at West Point are featured as part of the exhibit as samples of gold used in making the coins.  Each gold bar contains 400 ounces of gold and weighs 27.5 pounds.

United States Mint Director Ed Moy participated in the opening ceremony of the American Numismatic Association’s World’s Fair of Money® and then officially opened the United States Mint exhibit. Read the rest of this entry »

United States Mint Features New 8-8-08 Double Prosperity Set and More at ANA World’s Fair of Money® in Baltimore

Washington - There will be products galore at the United States Mint booth #152 at the American Numismatic Association (ANA) World’s Fair of Money® July 30-August 3, 2008. It is a great time to purchase a special gift or add a new item to your collection.

Be among the first to get the 8-8-08 Double Prosperity Set, the latest product in the United States Mint Celebration Series, starting Friday, Aug. 1. The 8-8-08 Double Prosperity Set features one 24-karat American Buffalo One-Half Ounce Gold Uncirculated Coin and one 22-karat American Eagle One-Half Ounce Gold Uncirculated Coin.

Visitors to the United States Mint’s booth can also purchase proof and uncirculated versions of 2008-dated American Eagle Gold and Platinum Coins and 24-karat American Buffalo Gold Coins. For American Eagle and American Buffalo Gold Coins, available options include one ounce ($50 denomination), one-half ounce ($25 denomination), one-quarter ounce ($10 denomination) and one-tenth ounce ($5 denomination) weights. New gold Double Eagle $20 coin debuts at World’s Fair of Money - NJ.com

The U.S. Mint is planning a standout exhibit for the World’s Fair of Money, the nation’s largest coin show, which opens Wednesday in Baltimore.

The mint plans to unveil its 2009 ultra-high-relief Double Eagle, which will recreate what many consider the most beautiful gold piece ever — the 1907 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle.

Contursi to bring 1854 Kellogg $20 to Baltimore

The finest known U.S. territorial gold coin, the 1854 Kellogg & Co. $20, graded PCGS SP-69, will return to Baltimore for a public exhibit for the first time since it was sold by The John Hopkins University as part of the legendary Garrett Collection more than a quarter century ago.

“This is a homecoming. It’s the first time it will be publicly showcased in Baltimore in 28 years,” said Steven L. Contursi, President of Rare Coin Wholesalers of Dana Point, California (www.RCW1.com), the coin’s owner.

He is bringing it to Baltimore for an educational exhibit during the first four days of the American Numismatic Association World’s Fair of Money® in the Baltimore Convention Center, July 30 – August 3, 2008.

Exhibits, Special Events and Educational Programs Highlight Baltimore World’s Fair of Money

The American Numismatic Association’s 2008 World’s Fair of Money® will give visitors a chance to see millions of dollars in rare coins, learn from the world’s top numismatists, and explore the history of Baltimore.

The event, held July 30 to August 3 at the Baltimore Convention Center, will feature over 1,100 dealers and numismatic vendors, world-class exhibits, 15 mints from five continents and a variety of educational presentations for every age and level of interest.

“Money is history you can hold in your hands,” said ANA President Barry Stuppler. “We’ll have thousands of collectors and dealers from around the country buying and selling items ranging in value from a few cents each to $1 million. You can see everything from a half cent to a $100,000 bill, and it’s free.”

United States Mint Director Edmund Moy will unveil a new, pure gold coin – the much anticipated 2009-dated Ultra High Relief Double Eagle – immediately after opening ceremonies on July 30. It’s a modern, 24-karat version of what many call the most beautiful American coin ever created, the famous Augustus Saint-Gaudens double eagle.
