Wicker Praises Relocation of “In God We Trust” on Presidential $1 Coins - Coin News

U.S. Sen. Roger Wicker has more reason to celebrate than most for the new 2009 Presidential Dollar designs the United States Mint released on Wednesday. He introduced the amendment calling for the motto “In God We Trust” to be relocated from the edge of the $1 coin to its face. (View up close 2009 Presidential $1 Coin design images.)

“The words of these two phrases symbolize who we are as Americans and should not be relegated to the rim of this new, high-profile coin. They should continue to be proudly and prominently displayed,” said Mr. Wicker in 2007 when he was a member of the U.S. House of Representatives.”

Country Takes Notice of New Cent Designs - NumisMaster

The public got its first glimpse of the new Lincoln cent reverse designs on Sept. 22. U.S. Mint Director Ed Moy and Jim Rubin, an Abraham Lincoln look-alike, revealed them on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial.

The new designs are meant for four 2009 circulating cents in honor of the bicentennial of Lincoln’s birth and the 100th anniversary of the Lincoln cent. They each mark a different phase in Lincoln’s life:

Presidential $1 Coin Designs for 2009

The United States Mint on Wednesday introduced newly designed 2009 Presidential $1 coins and released detailed artist images of the dollars. The American public will see 2009 circulating coins honoring Presidents William Henry Harrison, John Tyler, James K. Polk and Zachary Taylor. Most interestingly, different design elements have been implemented compared to the initial series of 2007 and 2008 coins.

Notable in the new designs is the placement of “In God We Trust,” which in past years has been on the edge of each Presidential dollar. A public outcry occurred when the U.S. Mint inadvertently issued a small subset of 2007 dollars that did not have the inscription because of minting errors. Also, while many thought edge letterings on coins would be a fresh approach, fewer liked “In God We Trust” there …

U.S. Mint Halts Production of Two American Eagle Gold Coins - Coin News

The United States Mint halted production and will no longer ship 2008 one-half ounce and one-quarter ounce American Eagle gold coins to authorized dealers, it was announced Monday. Additional gold and platinum coins will be halted when their blank inventories are depleted.

“Due to the extreme fluctuating market conditions for 2008, as well as current market conditions, gold and silver demand is unprecedented and the demand for platinum is unusually high,” the U.S. Mint said in a memorandum.

“The U.S. Mint has worked diligently to attempt to meet demand, however, blank supplies are very limited and it is necessary for the U.S. Mint to focus remaining bullion production primarily on American Eagle Gold one-ounce and Silver one-ounce coins,” the Mint said.

United States Mint Unveils 2009 Presidential $1 Coin Designs

WASHINGTON - The United States Mint today released the four new portraits that will appear on the obverse (heads side) of Presidential $1 Coins in 2009.  The coins honor former Presidents William Henry Harrison, John Tyler, James K. Polk and Zachary Taylor.

“We hope Americans not only appreciate the aesthetic qualities of the Presidential $1 Coins, but also remember each President’s legacy every time they use the coins in their daily transactions,” said United States Mint Director Ed Moy.  “Presidential $1 Coins are convenient to use, save the taxpayers money, and are durable and last for decades.”

Beginning with the William Henry Harrison Presidential $1 Coin next year, “In God We Trust” will appear on the obverse of all Presidential $1 Coins.  As a result, the edge lettering of the 2009 Presidential $1 Coins will be slightly different from that of 2007 and 2008.  Where currently there are single dots (delimiters) between the inscriptions, in 2009 there will be three stars between “E Pluribus Unum” and the mint mark and 10 stars between the year of minting and “E Pluribus Unum.” Read the rest of this entry »

Mastering the penny - The Advance Titan

Every American is familiar with the penny. The little copper coin bearing a bust of President Lincoln resides in many a wallet and penny jar across the country. Most Americans use coins every day, but they probably don’t think about the process of designing and minting the coins. Richard Masters, an art professor at UW-Oshkosh, was the same way for a long time.

He said, “You know, when we were kids collecting coins, you never thought about the artist behind the design on there. You thought the coin gods are doing this, or somebody you never heard of. And when you see your own work on something like that it just seems to make the world smaller.”

US Mint produces 33.7 billion commemorative state quarters - Coin News

The U.S. Mint has produced a whopping 33,774,200,000 state quarters since the inception of the 50 State Quarters® Program in 1999. The total does not include the several hundred million Arizona state quarters that started to hit circulation in June. And by the program’s completion with the final Hawaiian commemorative later this year, the Mint will have issued well over 34 billion state quarters.

That’s quite impressive, despite a slowing U.S. circulating coin pace. And in reality, the Mint’s quarter production output is many millions higher.

Architect urged mint to employ good cents - sj-r.com

Earl Wallace Henderson doesn’t give up easily. As a fledgling architect, “Wally” Henderson designed the restoration of the Old State Capitol in the 1960s, when skeptics said it couldn’t be done.

Now, 40 years later, Henderson has triumphed again. Thanks to him, the building he saved will appear on millions of commemorative pennies due to be issued next year.

The new Lincoln pennies are dishonest about Honest Abe - WalletPop Blog

The U.S. Mint is officially the P.T. Barnum of currency. It’s addicted to showmanship. Yesterday, in a heartwarmingly goofy ceremony at Washington DC’s Lincoln Memorial, an actor dressed as Abe unveiled its four new designs for the penny, all of which will be released in 2009 to commemorate the 200th birthday of the put-upon Civil War president. They’re just the latest pocket party favors for our ongoing patriotic fervor.

New penny designed partly in Philadelphia - Philadelphia Inquirer

As a teen, Charles Vickers, a sculptor/engraver for the U.S. Mint in Philadelphia, had to split firewood using a wedge and a wood-headed hammer called a maul.

So, a few years ago, when the mint assigned him to submit one of four new designs for the penny, an image immediately came to the Jenkintown gentleman’s mind: Lincoln’s reading a book while taking a break from splitting logs with a double-banded maul.

A new penny, but why? - Los Angeles Times

In honor of the upcoming bicentennial of Abraham Lincoln’s birth, the U.S. Mint is giving the 100-year-old Lincoln penny a new look. The front will continue to show his profile, but the Lincoln Memorial on the back will be replaced by images that are intended to evoke different aspects of his life, such as a log cabin and young Abe sitting on a log, reading. This is expected to create a big buzz in the coin-collecting world, but in truth, the only makeover the penny needs is a disappearing act.
