High-end rarities struggled a bit at Stack's 74th anniversary auction held in Baltimore, Nov. 9 to 11.

One of the highlights, an 1861 Confederate cent encapsulated in an ANACS holder as Genuine and graded by Stack's as choice Proof, sold for $112,700 (inclusive of Stack's 15 percent buyer's fee).

One of the more unusual and rare items in US numismatics will be auctioned by Stack’s in their Philadelphia Americana Sale September 23-26 in Philadelphia,  is Lot 4299, an Indian Head Cent struck in gold.  From the Stacks Catalog:

“This off-metal error is 18.3 mm (horizontal) X 18.1 mm (vertical). 1.1 mm to 1.2 mm thick. Plain Edge. with Lovely olive gold fields join yellow gold lustre and coppery highlights in the protected areas. This specimen weighs 64.4 grains and was probably struck on a quarter eagle planchet...

Larry Stack no longer with firm

Lawrence R. “Larry” Stack left the family New York City-based numismatic firm Stack’s May 22 after more than three decades. He was the director of numismatics at the time of his departure.

1801 $10 gold piece heads Stack’s sale – Numismatic News

An 1801 Bass Dannreuther-2, T-25, Capped Bust $10 gold piece graded MS-65 by Numismatic Guaranty Corp. attracted a bid of $201,250 to lead the prices realized list for Stack’s 73rd anniversary sale Oct. 22. Overall, the sale realized $5,074,315.20. Prices realized include a 15 percent buyer’s fee for each lot.
