Swiss clean out S Africa Krugerrand coin maker - This is Money

The sole maker of South African Krugerrands today ran out of the iconic bullion coin after an ‘unusually large’ order from a buyer in Switzerland.

An unnamed Swiss buyer ordered a massive 5000 ounces, cleaning out the Rand Refinery’s gold stocks.

Special coin to commemorate Gandhi’s struggle in S Africa - The Times of India

A special coin commemorating Mahatma Gandhi’s struggle in South Africa against racial discrimination in the early 1900s has been launched here.

Natal Minister of Finance KwaZulu and leader of the ruling African National Congress (ANC) in the province Zweli Mkhize launched the coin last night marking the beginning of an Indian Experience Festival.

Vredefort Dome on R2 gold commemorative coin - SABCnews.com

The Vredefort Dome World Heritage Site is to be struck on a R2 gold commemorative coin, the South African Mint announced today. This would take place on a koppie in the Vredefort Dome during the opening of the International Large Meteorite Impacts and Planetary Evolution IV Conference on August 17.

Mozambique Coins Circulate, but With Success? - NumisMaster

Great news! Bank of Mozambique Governor Ernesto Gove announced June 19 to the Agencia de Informacao de Mocambique (Information Agency of Mozambique) that this African nation has turned the corner, with coins successfully circulating in place of small denomination paper bank notes.

Gove said, “We are pleased with the use of metallic coins. We have noted with great satisfaction that coins are being heavily used in markets, to pay road tolls or bus fares.”

Mandela Birthday Coin from South African Mint - CoinNews

A commemorative Nelson Mandela “Madiba” five rand (R5) coin was introduced today by the South African Mint and  Reserve Bank to celebrate Mandela’s 90th birthday.

Five million bi-metallic coins featuring a smiling Mandela have already been minted and will be released into circulation as part of his official birthday cerebration on Friday, July 18.

Eight South African Proof Sets at Dix Noonan Webb - NumisMaster

One unusual group of sets that closed in last weeks Dix Noonan Webb sale No. 78 was a run of eight South African proof sets. Normally I do not see too many of these at auction, though I know they do trade privately.

Some 20 years ago these scarce 20th Century cased sets were a very hot commodity, with high prices and a handful of collectors striving to obtain them.
