Old West flavors S-mint Seated half dollars - Numismatic News

By the time the San Francisco Mint opened for business in 1854 the Seated Liberty half dollar had already been in production for almost 15 years. That did not keep San Francisco from producing some very interesting and in a few cases rare Seated Liberty half dollars. In a collection of the San Francisco Seated Liberty half dollars you can really assemble a set of the large silver coins in use back when the West was truly wild.

The San Francisco facility produced its first coins in 1854 but true to the situation in the region at the time the only coins the facility produced that year were gold and primarily they were large gold coins with eagles and double eagles being the only denominations with mintages of more than 100,000 pieces.

Austrian Railways Fourth Silver Commemorative, “Empress Elisabeth West Railway”

In the Austrian Empire the railway lines north to the coalfields and factories of Bohemia or south to the harbour of Trieste and the Adriatic shipping lanes were by far the most important. A railway line from Vienna westwards parallel to the Danube River was of less consequence.

However, the Kingdom of Bavaria was very anxious to see such a line between Salzburg and Vienna, which would enable trains from Munich to travel eastwards through Hungary and down to Constantinople. Plans by the government to build such a line were subsequently abandoned in 1856 to a private consortium, the Empress Elisabeth Railway Company.

Commemorative Overload Left Patriot $1 Unnoticed - NumisMaster

The 1998 Black Revolutionary War Patriots dollar is already one of the most costly of the modern silver dollar commemoratives, but based on factors like mintage it would not be out of the question to see it continue to post solid gains.

We can get into all sorts of discussions about why the Black Patriots dollar had limited sales, and there would probably be an element of truth in most. The overriding factor was simply that commemorative sales were weak at the time. It was still close to the Atlanta Olympic program and the other issues of 1995 and 1996…

Something for Everybody With Circ Morgans - NumisMaster

Anyone can collect Morgan dollars. The fact that some Morgans sell for very high prices in grades of MS-65 and above does not mean Morgan dollars are only for the rich. There is absolutely nothing wrong with a lower grade and lower priced Morgan dollar collection and in fact such collections may be even more fun.

I am not saying that merely because it sounds good. I have had enormous fun over the years with Morgan dollars and have probably never owned a single MS-65. It all started with my grandfather. Every Saturday he would come to the house and bring my brother and me a silver dollar.

U.S. treasure-hunting firm Odyssey Marine Exploration denied Spanish government claims that it “secretly” scoured the ocean floor to find a wreck containing a $500 million haul of colonial-era coins. “Odyssey in this case followed all the appropriate archaeological and legal protocols,” Odyssey CEO Greg Stemm told Efe, calling allegations to the contrary false and “inflammatory.”

Spain’s Culture Ministry on Tuesday accused Odyssey of carrying out “this underwater excavation in secret after having received specific instructions that it was prohibited.”
