2008 United States Mint Annual Uncirculated Dollar Coin Set Available August 7

WASHINGTON - Collectors of United States Mint dollar coins should mark their calendars for the release of the 2008 United States Mint Annual Uncirculated Dollar Coin SetTM on August 7, 2008, at 12:00 Noon (ET). The set, priced at $37.95, includes uncirculated versions of four Presidential $1 Coins, a Golden Dollar featuring Sacagawea and an American Eagle Uncirculated Silver Dollar.

The obverse of the Presidential $1 Coins, struck at the United States Mint at Philadelphia, bear the images of James Monroe, John Quincy Adams, Andrew Jackson and Martin Van Buren. United States Mint Sculptor-Engraver Joseph Menna designed and executed the obverse of the James Monroe Presidential $1 Coin. United States Mint Sculptor-Engraver Don Everhart designed and executed the obverse of the John Quincy Adams Presidential $1 Coin. Artistic Infusion Program Master Designer Joel Iskowitz designed, and United States Mint Sculptor-Engraver Jim Licaretz executed, the obverse of the Andrew Jackson Presidential $1 Coin. Iskowitz designed, and United States Mint Sculptor-Engraver Phebe Hemphill executed, the obverse of the Martin Van Buren Presidential $1 Coin. Makeover for Sac $1 - NumisMaster

Weighing in on the new reverse design for the Sacagawea dollar mandated by Congress, the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee viewed more than a dozen designs June 18 before selecting a female Indian planting maize (corn) in a field. The design is intended for use on the 2009 dollar coin, which is the first that will host a Native American theme.

Each year thereafter a different Native American design will appear.

We have the loonie, the U.S. gets ‘Sacagawea dollar’ - The Windsor Star

Do enough cross-border shopping, and you just might encounter a loonie of a different nationality: The gold-coloured U.S. dollar coin.

“Basically, these coins are there to co-exist with the dollar notes,” said Greg Hernandez, a spokesman for the United States Mint.

“We tell people that in certain everyday transactions, the dollar coin seems to work best. For instance: mass transit, a cup of coffee, a newspaper, laundromat, drive-thru car washes.”
