The Royal Canadian Mint’s world-famous “Million Dollar Coin” made its Asian debut at Beijing’s Olympic Expo 2008 (Olympex). The unveiling was conducted by The Honourable David Emerson, Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Olympic Committee President Jacques Rogge and Honorary IOC President for Life Juan Antonio Samaranch.

Royal Canadian Mint Issues 2008 Lucky Loonie - Coin News

With the Beijing Olympic Games and Beijing Paralympic Games just around the corner, the Royal Canadian Mint is proud to issue the 2008 Lucky Loonie, the latest in its extensive Olympic themed circulation coin program.

The one-dollar coin, which features the familiar loon landing in water and the official emblem of the Canadian Olympic Team, enters into circulation today.

“Canadians from coast to coast can wish our athletes luck by keeping special coins produced by the Royal Canadian Mint, including the 2008 Lucky Loonie,” said Ian E. Bennett, President and CEO of the Royal Canadian Mint.

“The Mint has provided each member of the Canadian Olympic and Paralympic Teams competing in Beijing with a Lucky Loonie as their own personal good luck charm and through the launch of the coin, Canadians also have an opportunity to own a piece of the Olympic dream.”

Royal Canadian Mint’s breast cancer coin honored

The Royal Canadian Mint received a welcome accolade from its peers when the Mint Directors Conference, holding its 25th annual meeting in Busan, Korea, presented it with the Most Technologically Advanced Circulation Coin Award for its 25-cent breast cancer coloured circulation coin.

This is the second honour earned by this inspirational and innovative circulation coin, which was previously recognized in May 2007 as the “Best New Coin” by the International Association of Currency Affairs.

Canadian Mint to Focus on World Market - NumisMaster

Remaining competitive internationally, leveraging off technology and exploiting opportunities as world metal prices continue to rise will be the objectives of the Royal Canadian Mint, says its president and chief executive officer, Ian Bennett.

The Mint recently announced a record C$30.1 million profit for 2007.

“Our target had been growth, now it is growth and profit,” Bennett said. “We doubled our profit last year, which was a great achievement,” Bennett noted in an exclusive interview with World Coin News.

Royal Canadian Mint Issues Special Centennial Commemorative Coins

Celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Royal Canadian Mint with special commemorative coins! It has been 100 years since Governor General Earl Grey activated the press to strike a fifty-cent piece, Canada’s first domestically produced coin. What would become known as the Royal Canadian Mint was officially open for business.
