Early Proof prices coins soar - Coin Values

Many collectors are concentrating on obtaining high-grade modern Proof coins, mainly in the Proof 69 and 70 grades for registry sets or just to have near-perfect or perfect coins. Other collectors, however, have been seeking earlier Proof coins from the 19th and 20th centuries.

As a result, values for these earlier Proof coins have soared, many to the point where dealers are willing to pay full retail prices just to obtain a pleasing array of inventory to offer customers.

2008 Britannia coins released by Royal Mint - Coin News

A new elegant Britannia design adorns freshly minted 2008 United Kingdom silver and gold collector coins launched by The Royal Mint. The bullion proof coins bear a standing portrait of Britannia, incorporating the motifs of the lighthouse, the trident, the shield and the helmet, as waves crash in the background.

“She [Britannia] almost appears to form part of the sea that surrounds and protects the British Isles.”

The new design rendered by John Bergdahl is the latest depiction of Britannia, and the seventh in the series since it was introduced in 1987.

One unusual group of sets that closed in last weeks Dix Noonan Webb sale No. 78 was a run of eight South African proof sets. Normally I do not see too many of these at auction, though I know they do trade privately.

Some 20 years ago these scarce 20th Century cased sets were a very hot commodity, with high prices and a handful of collectors striving to obtain them.

Royal Mint’s Queen Elizabeth Piedfort Platinum Coin - CoinNews

The British Royal Mint has announced the sale of the extremely limited 2008 UK Queen Elizabeth I £5 Piedfort Platinum Proof Coin, and only days after releasing the four-coin silver proof Piedforts.

The platinum coin, like its sister silver version, has the piedfort-style double weight and thickness. It’s on sale for a whopping £5250 (~$10,264 USD). Too high? Set aside the coin’s beauty and consider only its limited 150 issuance and 3 ounce platinum content. You might just reconsider.

‘Prooflike’ coins vary in their degree of clear reflectivity - Coin World

In virtually any series of coins, collectors may run across a designation of “prooflike” surfaces, but the term is most often encountered in regard to Morgan silver dollars.

It gained currency in the 1950s and 1960s as the last of silver dollar releases from Treasury Department vaults took place. Seemingly vast quantities of decades-old coins suddenly were becoming available in “Uncirculated” condition.

It was apparent even among all these never-used coins that there were substantial differences in overall appealing qualities. Some were “bag-marked” (heavily affected by contact marks). Some were toned from contact with canvas. Some had dull surfaces and others – exceptional pieces – were, well, “prooflike.”
