History repeats when it comes to $1 coins - Numismatic News

Be still my heart. At long last I might be able to have a Rutherford B. Hayes dollar. Once seen as a remote possibility, a Hayes dollar, or a roll of Warren Harding dollars are now all within the realm of possibility as the United States is producing dollar coins featuring former Presidents.

In fact, the idea of $1 coins featuring the Presidents is hardly a new concept. They could not do it on coins, but back in the 1950s the company that made the milk that was delivered each morning had a promotion that saw you receive a plastic Presidential token every morning when your milk was delivered.

New U.S. Mint $1 Coin Campaign Doomed to Fail - Coin News

Americans are very familiar with the continual failure of dollar coins in every day use. In recent years, the Susan B. Anthony and the Sacagawea Golden Dollar have lost their acceptance battle.

Today, the new Presidential $1 coins honoring U.S. presidents is failing. Over one billion of the coins have been minted since the series start in 2007. Yet, few are ever seen in daily use. The paper bill is the currency of choice.

U.S. Mint picks Austin for promotion of dollar coin - Dallas Morning News

This trend-setting Hill Country city is one of four communities nationwide that will heavily promote the new $1 coin, a gold-colored alternative to the dollar bill that the government hopes will save money on, well, money.

The coins have been in circulation throughout the country, but few people use them or even see them.

Mint Makes a Green Pitch for the Coin that Never Caught On - PDX Green

Twice, the U.S. government tried to launch a $1 coin into widespread use. Twice, it failed. The silver-colored Susan B. Anthony, easily mistaken for a quarter, never caught on. Neither did Sacagawea, the Shoshone woman who helped Lewis & Clark on their trek and who adorns the “Golden Dollar” rolled out in 2000.

Now the U.S. Mint is betting that an appeal to our inner environmentalist will succeed where other approaches have not. Portland is among four cities to hear the pitch first.

Add edge slippage on Presidential dollar coins - Numismatic News

In the July 29 issue of Numismatic News I reported on a shifted edge inscription error found on a George Washington Presidential dollar.

Its cause was the absence of a dot between the mintmark and E PLURIBUS UNUM (EPU) where a wide space sans any inscription occurs, according to U.S. Mint spokesman Michael White.

Portland one of the cities to promote newest dollar coin - The World Link

The Sacagawea dollar coin was a dud. So how about Millard Fillmore? Maybe a Calvin Coolidge?  The U.S. Mint’s two tries to introduce a dollar coin in recent years tanked. But they’re trying again, this time with coins honoring the presidents, and Portland is one of four cities picked for a promotional campaign. The silver-colored Susan B. Anthony dollar was easily mistaken for a quarter.

The gold-colored dollar coin honoring Sacagawea, the Shoshone interpreter for Lewis and Clark, whose statue graces Portland’s Forest Park, didn’t do any better.

Americans hold dollar bill dear despite obsolescence - Dallas Morning News

Could it be our fascination with George Washington’s Mona Lisa smile? What else keeps the dollar bill alive despite its obvious obsolescence?

Most industrialized economies don’t waste time with paper money of such paltry purchasing power. For the 15 European countries in the eurozone, the smallest denomination of printed bank notes is the 5 euro, worth almost $8. In Britain, the lightest piece of folding money is 5 pounds, worth $10. In Japan, it’s 1,000 yen, about $9.

Paper v. Coin Dollars - Coin Collector’s Blog

Since the introduction of the Presidential $1 Coin, many numismatic venues have discussed how to make the program more successful. Reports are being made that Gallup has been calling people asking questions that lead to the impression they are researching the circulation of dollar coins.

When asked about how to increase the circulation of the dollar coin, the dominant suggestion has been to remove the one dollar federal reserve note from circulation. It is thought that the move would force people to use the coin when the paper currency is no longer available.
