Senator Edward William Brooke III Bronze Medal

Former United States Senator Edward William Brooke III was awarded the the Congressional Gold Medal on Wednesday, October 28, 2009. Reproductions of the medal in bronze may now be ordered from the U.S. Mint.

In a ceremony held in the U.S. Capitol Rotunda, President Obama made the presentation in front of many noted individuals including Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senator John Kerry, all of whom also had short speeches for the occasion.

Brookes has the distinction of being the first African-American ever to be elected by popular vote to the United States Senate. His election in 1966 broke many barriers and his political philosophy gained him many allies. [click to continue…]

President Obama Honors the First African-American Elected to the U.S. Senate by Popular Vote

WASHINGTON - President Obama today presented former U.S. Senator Edward William Brooke III with the Congressional Gold Medal for his unprecedented and enduring service to the Nation.  The ceremony was held in the U.S. Capitol Rotunda.

The Congressional Gold Medal, designed and struck by the United States Mint, honors Senator Brooke's pioneering accomplishments in public service.  Senator Brooke broke new ground at a time when few African-Americans held state or Federal office.

He was the first African-American elected to the U.S. Senate by popular vote, serving with distinction for two terms, from January 3, 1967, to January 3, 1979.  During his first term, Brooke was appointed to the President's Commission on Civil Disorders, where his work on discrimination in housing served as the basis for the 1968 Civil Rights Act.

Brooke began his career in public service as chairman of the Boston Finance Commission, where he established an outstanding record of confronting and eliminating graft and corruption. [click to continue…]

For the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee Oct. 14, there were the obvious design choices for two upcoming congressional gold medals and the not so obvious choices. Members of the Commission of Fine Arts Oct. 15 felt the same way, but made different choices.

Armstrong, Edwin E. ‘Buzz’ Aldrin, Jr., Michael Collins and Friendship 7 commander John H. Glenn, Jr., will be awarded Congressional Gold Medals honoring their historic achievements.

President Obama on Friday signed into law the New Frontier Congressional Gold Medal Act authorizing the gold medals and national bronze duplicates struck by the United Sates Mint and offered for sale to the public.

"The Apollo 11 mission inspired a generation to pursue careers in science and engineering, and to believe in the power of America," commented Rep. Alan Grayson, who introduced the House version of the act that passed on the 40th anniversary of the moon landing. "In that moment, these astronauts represented America’s destiny, a destiny shared by the thousands of men and women who worked to make it happen."...

Wirtland has released its first gold coin, known unofficially as "Wirtland Crane" or "Gold Crane".  The 1/10 oz. coin is minted in 24 carat gold, in cooperation with coin designer Daniel Carr and his company "Moonlight Mint." Daniel Carr is creator of "Amero" coin, and author of the New York and Rhode Island 2001 statehood quarters.
