1855 Coronet Cent - NumisMaster

Designed by Christian Gobrecht, the 1855 Coronet large cent had a mintage of more than 1.5 million. The output would have been even greater if the Mint hadn’t suspended coinage for several months while repairs and improvements were being made to the building.

“The operations of the mint, except the receiving of deposits and melting, assaying, and paying the same, were suspended on the 19th of July last,” the Mint director wrote in March 1856 in his annual report, “at which time the repairs authorized by an appropriation made by the last Congress to the mint building were commenced.

‘American’ classic ‘rarities’ not as rare as collectors think - Coin World

Collectors interested in United States copper large cents, issued from 1793 through 1857, have numerous ways to collect coins representing each of the six types that constitute the production.

Some coin rarities aren’t as rare as many collectors may have been led to believe. An 1804 silver dollar is but one coin that collectors of most means should be able to afford.

Collectors interested in United States copper large cents, issued from 1793 through 1857, have numerous ways to collect coins representing each of the six types that constitute the production.

A wealth of numismatic reference books, monographs and other published works is devoted to the entire time period as well as individual series at collectors’ disposal. The Early American Coppers club (EAC) was founded for collectors interested in becoming acquainted with other collectors with similar interests for the exchange of numismatic information and research.

An amazing Braided Hair large cent struck on a half cent planchet will be making its first public auction appearance at Heritage Auction Galleries’ 2008 Baltimore ANA Signature® Auction.

The coin has been consigned by a very private Northwest family whose members were unaware of its rarity or significance. The newly discovered rarity will be sold July 30-August 2, 2008, and the lot listing will be available online at HA.com during early July.

Thoughts on the Nation’s first cents - NumisMaster

Large cents dated 1793 have attracted collectors for at least 150 years. They were the first coins struck by the new U.S. Mint in Philadelphia, a city with a population of about 40,000 at that time.

Nothing involving the first cents came easily. Finding a skilled engraver was a challenge. So was the acquisition of the copper needed to strike the coins. Many 1793 cents are found dark or corroded.

Coming up with the right design for the cent was also difficult. It was a hit-or-miss effort involving a lot of trial and error.
