Antarctic Explorers Coins Issued in Ireland - Coin News

Silver and gold coins were issued Wednesday by Ireland’s Central Bank to commemorate the adventurous feats by Antarctic explorers Earnest Shackleton and Tom Crean, and celebrate the International Polar Year.
The proof collector €5 and €100 coins feature the two historic Irish explorers with their ship ‘The Endurance’ backdropped within the steel grips of Antarctic ice.

Mint Allocates One-Ounce Gold Eagles - NumisMaster

The Mint began allocating supplies of one-ounce American Eagle gold bullion coins Aug. 25 because demand is outstripping supply.
Since March one-ounce silver American Eagle coins have also been allocated by the Mint because of high demand and limited supply.

Fate of 1933 double eagle $20s at issue - Numismatic News

“It is inherent in the very nature of this unique – to put it mildly – litigation that the admissibility of thousands of decades-old documents would be at issue,” wrote U.S. District Court Judge Legrome D. Davis in an Aug. 21 opinion about 10 genuine double eagle gold pieces, all dated 1933, that were turned over to the Mint by the daughter of Israel Swift for authentication, only to find that the Mint claims the coins as their own.

Beijing to London Olympic Games Handover Coins - Coin News

The Royal Mint revealed on Wednesday limited edition silver, gold and base metal £2 coins to commemorate the successful bid of London 2012 and mark the Olympic handover from Beijing.
The coins are the first legal tender UK coinage to display the London 2012 logo and the first to show the Olympic emblem.

France issues gold, silver coins of high face value - People’s Daily Online

France has decided to issue gold and silver euro coins of high face value, said a communique released by the Post Office of France and the Mint of France Friday.
Local media reported that 2 million silver coins with a face value of five euros each are about to be put up for sale in 1,000 post offices throughout the country as of Sept. 1.

Spain thinks shipwreck treasure is hidden in Gibraltar - Gibraltar News

The Spanish Government thinks that part of the treasure discovered by the Odyssey company is hidden in Gibraltar, possibly in a warehouse in the port area.
It will be recalled that last year, gold and silver coins were found by Odyssey at sea and flown from Gibraltar to the USA. The Spanish have lodged a claim, while Peru have now also done the same. Part of that haul is said to still be in Gibraltar, hidden away somewhere.

The sole maker of South African Krugerrands today ran out of the iconic bullion coin after an ‘unusually large’ order from a buyer in Switzerland.
An unnamed Swiss buyer ordered a massive 5000 ounces, cleaning out the Rand Refinery’s gold stocks.

Landlord Demands Rent in Gold Coins, Federal Court Affirms - Coin News

A Cleveland landlord can demand payments in gold coins, according to a federal appeals court ruling Wednesday.
The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit ruled a “gold clause” contained in a 1912 lease agreement was enforceable, reversing a lower courts decision and requiring it to determine an equivalent rent.

Stolen Rare Coin Returned to Garage Sale Buyer, Not Likely Owner - Coin News

In an unusual case, a judge decided that one of five stolen Swedish rare coins purchased at a garage sale — a Swedish 1632 Gustav II Adolf gold Dukat — would be returned to the daughter of the woman who bought them, and not to the owner’s estate who received the other four.
“This case raises squarely the conflict between two principles, protection of property and protection of commercial transactions,” said British Columbia Supreme Court Justice Bruce Butler who ruled to split the coins.

Overwhelming demand forced the United States Mint to suspend one-ounce American Eagle gold coin sales to their network of Authorized Purchasers on August 17.
The suspension of the investment gold coins has been lifted — at least on a limited basis, according to a U.S. Mint memo to its authorized dealers on August 22.

Wasn’t there a ban on owning the Canadian 1967 $20 gold coins, and when was it lifted?
The Canadian gold coin was one of those listed as a modern coin and thus not eligible for importation into the U.S. The ban was lifted at midnight on Dec. 30, 1974. Previous to that, there were severe restrictions on ownership of most modern gold, but many were smuggled in anyway.

Coin Treasure Claim from Peru Over “Black Swan” Shipwreck - Coin News

The Republic of Peru on Tuesday entered the legal fray between Odyssey Marine Exploration and Spain over a 17-ton booty of Colonial-era silver and gold coins discovered at a shipwreck site Odyssey code-named the “Black Swan.”
That legal dispute started back in May of 2007 after Odyssey — a Florida based treasure hunting, and deep-sea exploration firm — hauled up over 500,000 silver and gold coins from a 17th-century shipwreck site found on the Atlantic sea floor.

Andrew Jackson’s Liberty First Spouse Gold Coin and Medal Available August 28

WASHINGTON - The United States Mint will begin accepting orders for Andrew Jackson’s Liberty First Spouse Coin on August 28 at noon Eastern Time. The 24-karat gold coins will be available in 1/2-ounce proof and uncirculated versions priced at $619.95 and $599.95, respectively. Mintage is set at 40,000 across both product options. Customer demand will determine the ratio of proof to uncirculated coins produced.
The Presidential $1 Coin Act of 2005 contains a provision for the continuity of the First Spouse Coin Program in the event that a President served without a spouse. The provision calls for a gold coin to be issued bearing an obverse design emblematic of Liberty as represented on a United States coin issued during the President’s period of service and a reverse image emblematic of themes of that President. The United States Mint recently began selling its latest gold coin product targeted for Asian Americans. In a continuation of the Mint’s Celebration Series, the 8-8-08 Double Prosperity Set was launched August 1, 2008. The set includes two, uncirculated one-half ounce 2008 gold coins — the 22-karat American Eagle and the 24-karat American Buffalo.
