Great rarities sometimes involve great mysteries and that is the case with the 1861 Paquet reverse double eagle. With only two examples known, it ranks in the top group of great U.S. rarities, although it has so far not proven that at public auction. That day, however, may be coming.

American Buffalo Gold Proof CoinThe United States Mint on Thursday increased the prices of its numismatic gold coin offerings, bringing them to their highest level of the year.

The new prices were implemented in response to the latest several day rally in bullion prices, which brought the yellow metal to an all-time high Thursday morning of $1,123.40 an ounce. The coins affected include:

The US Mint implemented its latest pricing policy for numismatic gold and platinum coins on Jan. 12, 2009.

"Transparency, agility, and customer service are the catalysts for our new pricing method," said United States Mint Deputy Director Andy Brunhart at the time. "The volatile precious metals market prompted our customers to suggest that we re-vamp our process, and we listened."

The prices are directly related to the average weekly London Fix prices for these metals -- from Thursday AM to Wednesday AM. UHR $20 Double Eagle Gold CoinThe rapid rise in gold prices over the last week is likely to result in another round of price increases for the US Mint 2009 Ultra High Relief Double Eagle Gold and the 2008 and 2009 First Spouse Gold Coins.

The US Mint uses a five-day London gold average -- from Thursday to Wednesday -- to determine whether its collector gold coin prices go up, go down, or stay the same. The US Mint increased coin prices just last Wednesday, when London gold jumped above $1,000 an ounce. During the last four days, however, gold has averaged above $1,050 which is the next level to trigger another increase in coin prices. [click to continue…]

UHR Gold Coin2009 $20 Ultra High Relief Gold Double Eagle sales exploded with a sizzling 28,183 purchased by the end of its Jan. 22 launch day. In fact, average weekly sales were hitting 875 — a far cry from the early days. A higher price for the coin — up $100 by now — and the US Mint’s mandated ...
