Designs images were unveiled for modern Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ 1907 Double Eagle coins just months ago. Now 2009 Ultra High Relief Double Eagle Gold Coins are in production at West Point, the United States Mint announced Monday. With that, everything is in stride for an early 2009 release that is sure to delight coin collectors.

United States Mint at West Point Begins Producing 2009 Ultra High Relief Double Eagle Gold Coin
WEST POINT, N.Y. -The United States Mint at West Point invited officials from numismatic organizations and reporters to witness the historic first production strike of the highly anticipated 2009 Ultra High Relief Double Eagle Gold Coin today. The new 24-karat (.9999 pure) gold coin is a modern version of what many call the most beautiful gold piece ever created-Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ 1907 Double Eagle. Finest Known Ultra High Relief Saint-Gaudens at November 2008 Santa Clara Expo

The finest known 1907 Ultra High Relief Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle gold coin will be the centerpiece of a multi-million dollar exhibit, “100 Greatest U.S. Coins,” during the first three days of the Santa Clara, California Coin, Stamp & Collectibles Expo, November 13 – 16, 2008. The show will be held in the Santa Clara Convention Center, 5001 Great America Parkway, where free parking is available.
“The Ultra High Relief is graded PCGS Proof-69 and will be the focal point of an exhibit based on the popular book, ‘100 Greatest U.S. Coins.’ This outstanding display is courtesy of Certified Assets Management of Wilmington, Delaware, which values the Ultra High Relief at $5 million,” said Ronald J. Gillio, Expo General Chairman.

Fate of 1933 double eagle $20s at issue - Numismatic News

“It is inherent in the very nature of this unique – to put it mildly – litigation that the admissibility of thousands of decades-old documents would be at issue,” wrote U.S. District Court Judge Legrome D. Davis in an Aug. 21 opinion about 10 genuine double eagle gold pieces, all dated 1933, that were turned over to the Mint by the daughter of Israel Swift for authentication, only to find that the Mint claims the coins as their own.

He stresses that he is speaking as an individual and not as director of the U.S. Mint, but Edmund Moy is convinced that the ultra-high-relief gold Double Eagle to be released next year will be the most beautiful U.S. coin ever — maybe the most beautiful coin ever, period.
“Absolutely, without question,” he said during a telephone interview just before he unveiled the 24-karat-gold coin late last month at the World’s Fair of Money in Baltimore.

The U.S. Mint will soon be coming out with a gold coin that is a modern version of the 1907 Double Eagle. It’s being billed as the most beautiful coin ever created, and I was thinking of buying one each for my preschool-age granddaughters. When the girls reach college age, will they be likely to thank me, or will they secretly think that Grandpa should have put his money in a 529 savings plan instead?
