Like many coin collectors, Dan Davis began his hobby picking up pennies from the street, seat cushions and spare change jars at home when he was 10.
Davis cashed in on his first investment when he, as a young bank clerk in 1963, sold a silver dollar he came across in the bank for $50 — a handsome profit for someone whose weekly salary at the time was but $70.
