Sometimes even experts just can’t decide - Numismatic News

There are some coins that defy authentication. It may be that they are polished, corroded, or worn so much that none of their original surface remains. It may be that they are so rare that they are seldom seen outside of a museum or private collection. It may simply be the case of a coin from another country unfamiliar to the authenticator. Remember that you must know what the genuine looks like in order to authenticate a coin.
Putting aside the inexperience of the authenticator and those coins of extreme rarity still leaves plenty of coins that may defy authentication. So, how are they handled? This week I’m writing about the “No Decision” opinion and how it has evolved.

Grades may be same - Coin Values

Imagine finding two identical American Eagle platinum coins. One coin is housed in a Numismatic Guaranty Corp. holder, while the other is certified by the Professional Coin Grading Service.
Since NGC and PCGS are the largest firms of their kind, many would assume that our sample coins have the same value. That could be a very costly mistake.

‘Fourth-party grading’ doesn’t add depth - Numismatic News

For those who thought they had seen everything with coin grading, we now have fourth-party graders! Before we had grading companies it was pretty simple. It took two parties for coins to change hands – the buyer and seller plus a price list based on the state of preservation of the coin. Human nature typically had the seller lean on the better state of preservation of the coin (higher value) while the buyer often would estimate a lower grade (less cost).
The coin industry promoted the idea of an independent appraisal of coin (third-party grading) because it would simplify coin transactions and even promote sight-unseen trading of coins.
