Ancient Chinese coins on display at Eretz Israel Museum - Jerusalem Post

Some 3,000 years ago, the Shang Dynasty (1700-1027 BCE) in China was using cowries as money. Toward the end of that era, the first coins appeared, except that they weren’t the round coins we’re familiar with. Those only made their appearance around the fourth century BCE. No, those first Chinese coins looked like spades and knives and made their appearance around the eighth century BCE.

PCGS Expands World Coin Program in China

For its first-ever participation at the annual Beijing International Stamp & Coin Exposition, Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) produced special insert labels written in Chinese for encapsulated coins distributed as souvenirs.  As part of the company’s expanding international programs, Mandarin dialect marketing materials describing coin authentication and grading were produced for the first time by PCGS and distributed at the big show held October 24 – 27, 2008.

Chinese coin from Ch’ing Dynasty found in Darwin dig - thewest.com.au

A historic Chinese coin from the Ch’ing Dynasty has been discovered in an archeological dig in the heart of Darwin. The excavation began in a vacant lot behind the Sue Wah Chin building in the city centre on September 22, ahead of the lot’s redevelopment.

Constructed in the 1880s, the building is testament to the establishment and expansion of the Chinese community in the Northern Territory. It is the only building associated with Darwin’s 19th century Chinatown which still survives today.

China celebrates spacewalk with bullion coins - Coin News

China will commemorate their historic first spacewalk with legal tender silver and gold coins, The People’s Bank of China (PBOC) announced on Monday. The Central Bank said 60,000 one-ounce silver and 30,000 one-third ounce gold coins would be minted by the Shenyang Mint and issued on October 8, 2008.

The obverse (heads side) of each coin bears a decorative solar system map design while the colorized reverse portrays a taikonaut conducting a spacewalk below the Chinese words ‘To commemorate the success of China’s first spacewalk’.
