Loonies and Toonies - Canadian Dollar Coins - Susan’s Coin Blog

I have just returned from a wonderful 10-day trip to Nova Scotia and the Canadian outback, and as a dedicated numismatist, I couldn’t help but observe the way that the Canadian populace dealt with their money, particularly their coins.

Canada has pretty much the same denominations that the U.S. has: Cents (that don’t buy much, and which nobody picks up off the ground just like in the U.S.,) Nickels, Dimes, Quarters, Dollars (called “Loonies” because the standard design depicts the bird called a Loon,) and Two-Dollar bi-metallic coins (called “Toonies,” apparently named in honor of the One Dollar coin of which Canadians are very fond.)

Royal Canadian Mint Issues 2008 Lucky Loonie - Coin News

With the Beijing Olympic Games and Beijing Paralympic Games just around the corner, the Royal Canadian Mint is proud to issue the 2008 Lucky Loonie, the latest in its extensive Olympic themed circulation coin program.

The one-dollar coin, which features the familiar loon landing in water and the official emblem of the Canadian Olympic Team, enters into circulation today.

“Canadians from coast to coast can wish our athletes luck by keeping special coins produced by the Royal Canadian Mint, including the 2008 Lucky Loonie,” said Ian E. Bennett, President and CEO of the Royal Canadian Mint.

“The Mint has provided each member of the Canadian Olympic and Paralympic Teams competing in Beijing with a Lucky Loonie as their own personal good luck charm and through the launch of the coin, Canadians also have an opportunity to own a piece of the Olympic dream.”

Bennett, Million Dollar Coin to Make Appearances at CNA Convention - NumisMaster

Special guests and new attractions will highlight the Canadian Numismatic Association’s 2008 convention, set to take place July 17-20 at Ottawa’s Crowne Plaza Hotel.

Royal Canadian Mint Director Ian Bennett will help kick off the event. He will participate in the opening at 10 a.m. on July 18 and remain at the mint’s booth to sign autographs, said Serge Pelletier, director of communications for the convention.
