90th anniversary of end of World War I silver coins - Coin News

The British Royal Mint has produced a series of 18 sterling silver proof coins commemorating the 90th anniversary of the end of World War I. The coins are issued under the authorities of Alderney, the Cayman Islands and the Solomon Islands and have a total collection limit of just 5,000.

According to the Mint, the commemorative themes were “designed by the Royal Mint Design Team, drawing inspiration from the art and literature of those who experienced the war first hand and from their own visit to the battlefields of France and Belgium.”

Concern Grows Over Counterfeit British Pounds - NumisMaster

When the British Royal Mint took a sampling of the £1 coins in circulation five years ago during 2003 the mint concluded about 1 percent of the circulating “round pounds” was a counterfeit. This was of little concern when compared to counterfeit coins elsewhere.

The BRM once again has sampled the £1 coins in circulation. This time it appears the number of counterfeits in commerce has doubled, indicating perhaps as many as one in every 50 £1 coins in commerce is now bogus.

Minor British Institutions: The 50p coin - The Independent

The elegant 50-pence piece, or “fifty pee” as we call it, inelegantly, is a wonderful example of the life-cycle of a minor British institution. At first it was resented, as it supplanted another much-loved minor institution – the 10-shilling note. In October 1969, when the 50p coin was introduced, the nation was soon to lose its ancient system of pounds, shillings and pence, and, unwillingly, embrace decimalisation.

Royal Mint £5 Coins Celebrate Prince Charles’ 60th Birthday - Coin News

The British Royal Mint has announced the latest series of commemorative coins celebrating Prince Charles’ 60th birthday. The design is rather unusual in that both sides of the coin bear a prominent head portrait — Prince Charles and his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, making it a “two-headed” coin.

In early 2008, the Royal Mint released a nickel version for £9.95 as well as a silver version within sets. Today, single coins in proof silver and proof gold are available for the price of £39.95 and £875.00, respectively.

Britian’s new coin designs - NumisMaster

Domestic tabloid newspapers slam them. The daughter of the designer of Britain’s soon-to-be former coinage has bad mouthed them. There are predictions tourists will be confused by them, but Great Britain is about to go forward with its new coin designs despite outcries from some circles against the upcoming changes.

The April 22 German newspaper Der Spiegel made a good point that the first modernization of Great Britain’s coin designs in about a half century “reaffirms the country’s determination not to adopt the euro single currency any time soon.”
