Hispanic Society Wants Coins From ANS - NumisMaster

The Hispanic Society of America wants to sell some 38,000 “permanent loan” coins that the American Numismatic Society has held and been cataloging since the death of benefactor Arthur Milton Huntington in 1955 at age 85. Sotheby’s apparently will use ANS cataloging data to facilitate the sale, which some say could exceed $30 million.

The surprise move was reported in The Art Newspaper in a copyrighted story by Jason Edward Kaufman. A check of New York Supreme Court files reveals four court decisions, on March 4, April 8, June 4 and July 15 supporting the win for the Hispanic Society. Two decisions are marked “Default.”

Hispanic Society to sell historic coin collection? - The Art Newspaper

The Hispanic Society of America has recalled 38,000 coins from the American Numismatic Society (ANS) which have been on loan for more than half a century—and appears to be preparing to sell them.

The valuable collection consists of coins minted in Spain, its dependencies, and the powers that controlled Spain from the 5th century BC until the 20th century.

ANS Moves to New N.Y. Location - NumisMaster

The American Numismatic Society moved its 800,000-coin collection June 14 from its former headquarters building at 96 Fulton St. in Lower Manhattan to its new leased quarters at One Hudson Square.
