Ancient Chinese coins on display at Eretz Israel Museum - Jerusalem Post

Some 3,000 years ago, the Shang Dynasty (1700-1027 BCE) in China was using cowries as money. Toward the end of that era, the first coins appeared, except that they weren’t the round coins we’re familiar with. Those only made their appearance around the fourth century BCE. No, those first Chinese coins looked like spades and knives and made their appearance around the eighth century BCE.

A Flintshire history enthusiast, who uncovered three 700-year-old coins, is delighted after having his findings officially declared treasure. Peter Barker Jones, of Holywell, was exploring a field owned by his friend in July 2006, when he came across a silver coin on the surface of the ground.

Mr Jones, who says he has always been interested in local history and archaeology, was searching for old flint tools, where he believes there was the site of a Neolithic camp, when he happened across the object.

On Second Thought - Ancient Coin Collecting

After reading the latest Elkins and Barford blog posts, I was inclined to consider the source and ignore them. But, having slept on it, I have to ask myself WHY? Why should I have spent more than 40 years of my life learning about ancient coins, and the cultures that produced them, just to have some star-gazer with a fixation on academic supremacy characterize me personally as a rank amateur with nothing but $$$ for a motivation?

Sour Grapes - Ancient Coin Collecting

My previous blog post heralded the appointment of Brent R. Benjamin to the Cultural Property Advisory Committee (CPAC) as a positive step in fulfilling the intent of the Convention on Cultural Property Implementation Act. Specifically, that is to provide a balanced perspective when evaluating requests from other nations for the imposition of import restrictions on cultural property. The eleven presidential appointments to CPAC come from diverse segments of society that are mandated by law—so that the work of the committee will reflect the views and interests of society, not just of a favored special interest.

CPAC Appointment is Positive News - Ancient Coin Collecting

The latest selection by President Bush to the Cultural Property Advisory Committee already has some in the archaeological community grumbling as they see Brent Benjamin’s appointment as “bad news”. That is hardly unexpected I suppose, considering that archaeologists have in effect had a lock on at least one of the museum community seats on the committee for some time.

People enjoy the designs on the 50 state quarters and other coins commemorating events and places. But in ancient times, the importance of what was depicted on coins spoke volumes.

When it comes to holding history in your hands, nothing compares with coins from former empires. Everyone from benevolent rulers to dictators memorialized themselves or key exploits on coins of the realm.

Struck from copper, bronze, silver, gold or electrum (an alloy of gold and silver), the peoples of the ancient civilizations revered them for their value and the information they relayed.

In ancient times, the inhabitants of the Land of Israel and its environs would raise pigeons in underground caves. Called “columbariums,” the caves had small niches, in which the birds laid their eggs. Over the years many columbariums have been unearthed at ancient sites around the country, particularly at those containing finds from the Second Temple period. A few days ago, archaeologists made a most surprising find at the bottom of such a columbarium, at a site at Kibbutz Ramat Rachel near Jerusalem - a hoard of coins from the time of the destruction of the Second Temple (70 C.E.).

An Islamic coin from 805 AD, found on the Hurum peninsula just west of Oslo, is causing a stir among Norwegian archaeologists. The silver dirhem, minted in Iran, is one of the earliest examples of coins to turn up in the Nordic countries.

Several other hordes in the area have contained similar coins, but none date back as far as this. The previous finds have been 100-150 years younger.
