Adding flames to the fire on an already hot year for bullion 2010 American Silver Eagles, July sales of the silver coins again attained record levels.
Coming in at 2,981,000 coins sold, the month goes down in the history books as the best ever July for the series that was introduced back in 1986. The old record was hit just last year when sales of the Silver Eagles came in slightly over 2.8 million -- shattering the previous record set in 2008 of only 1.25 million...

The United States Mint may yet be able to strike 2010 American Eagle Silver Proof Coins and 2010 American Eagle Silver Uncirculated Coins this year, according to recent testimony from U.S. Mint Director Ed Moy before a House subcommittee, but apparently only with the help of the United States Congress.
The news comes as a glimmer of hope to collectors of the numismatic coins which have been missing from the Mint's product line since late 2008. Due to overwhelming demand for the bullion American Silver Eagles, the Mint has not been able to procure enough planchets to also strike the proof and uncirculated options...

"The State of U.S. Coins and Currency" was discussed today by the House Subcommittee on Domestic Monetary Policy and Technology.
And topmost interest for collectors, the hearing revealed the possibility of amending law to approve the minting of 2010 American Eagle Silver Proof and Uncirculated Coins at the the expense or producing fewer bullion versions.
Led by Chairman Melvin L. Watt, representative from North Carolina, and ranking minority member Representative Ron Paul from Texas, the subcommittee had several lines of questioning as it related to U.S. coins and currency.
To answer those questions, two panels were called upon by the committee. The first panel included Edmund C. Moy, Director, United States Mint, Larry Felix, Director, Bureau of Engraving and Printing, Louise L. Roseman, Director, Division of Reserve Bank Operations and Payment Systems, Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve, and Ken Jenkins, Deputy Special Agent in Charge, Criminal Investigative Division, U.S. Secret Service.

1986 served as the inaugural year for the new American Silver Eagles series which have been struck annually ever since. They were only authorized the year before as part of the Liberty Coin Act of 1985, approved by Congress in June of that year and signed into law by President Ronald Reagan on July 9, 1985.
Congress created the authorizing legislation in response to political pressure to decrease the national strategic stockpile of the precious metal silver held by the United States. Many felt that the sale of the federally-owned silver could help lower the national deficit...

To sum up the latest United States Mint sales report, coins and sets experienced a deeper summer slowdown compared to prior weeks.
Of everything the U.S. Mint sold, there were only four that managed to do better than the prior report, and those not improve by much. Bullion coins, however are still in demand.
Bullion American Silver Eagle coins climbed to bring July's total to 1,648,000, adding 772,500 since July 7. The gain was soft compared to the higher 875,500 increase during the first week of the month. Still, the addition caused this year's tally to cross the 2008 end-of-year total. 2010 Silver Eagles sales are at 19,816,500 while 2008's ended with 19,583,500. Last year's record sales of 28,766,500 is now less than 9 million away, although most collectors would probably like to see a decline so that the Mint has enough supply to strike proof and uncirculated versions.

Nashville is over and a slow show it was, although well run and organized. Why? Recent floods, current economic repression, poor timing and a significant drop in precious metals? I think the repression has finally caught up to the market.
