Silver Eagle Tops Hawaii Volcanoes Quarters Three-Coin Set Sales

Newly released coin collecting products were in demand but not like 2012 American Silver Eagle proof coins, the latest sales report from the U.S. Mint reveals.

Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park Quarter Three-Coin Set

The Hawaii Volcanoes Quarters Three-Coin Set was the second best seller for the U.S. Mint, behind the Silver Eagle proof coin

They stole the limelight from the Hawaii Volcanoes Quarters Three-Coin Set and the 2012 Annual Uncirculated Dollar Coin Set.

62,623 Silver Eagle proof coins were ordered. That sudden jump was triple the amount purchased in the prior week, which was 22,848. With this latest gain, the total number of proof Silver Eagles sold hurdled the 600K milestone to land at 659,438. They have been on sale for approximately five months.

In second place among the top sellers was the debuting Hawaii Volcanoes Quarters Three-Coin Set. Sales initiated on Tuesday, September 4, and by Monday, September 10, an impressive 11,074 had been taken. Its start was better than the inaugural sales of the previous two issues. Acadia’s set originally opened with 10,701 and Chaco Culture’s set had 10,666.

As for the fresh new 2012 Annual Uncirculated Dollar Coin Set, it received 4,941 orders between Thursday and Monday. That was enough to place fifth, as collectors also picked up 8,127 of the 2012 Proof Sets and 5,105 of the 2012 Presidential $1 Coin Proof Sets. The latter crossed the 200K milestone with the total sold now at 204,992.

Also glaring on the chart below is the loss that hit the 2012-W American Silver Eagle uncirculated coin. Their number dropped by 8,791 in this round, down to 136,164. Since they have not been on the market for very long, with an on-sale date of August 2, the adjustment seems more like a counting error or the result of an inventory audit. Still, other possible reasons to account for the dramatic plunge could be a large amount of product returns or order cancellations.

All available sales on U.S. Mint coin collecting products are below. The first three columns of the table provide weekly United States Mint sales increases between the listed time periods, offering a sense of recent trends. The last column provides the latest United States Mint sales totals as of Monday, September 10. Bullion coin tables are found toward the bottom, with the most recent sales as of Wednesday, September 12, except for the America the Beautiful Silver Bullion Coins, which have sales as of September 10.
