Opening 2012 American Eagle Silver Uncirculated Coin Sales

Despite the lower price and earlier launch date, the 2012-W American Eagle Silver Uncirculated Coin did not start off as strong as the version from last year. According to the newest U.S. Mint sales data, collectors ordered 123,801 in its first weekend.

Also experiencing a slowdown were many of the popular annual proof sets. Only one out of eleven managed to improve over the prior week’s gains. In all, 52 U.S. Mint numismatic products saw higher week-over-week numbers compared to 62 in the last report.

The new American Eagle Silver Uncirculated Coin may have been the highest selling collector item of the week, at $45.95 a piece, but it did not seize the same debut demand as the prior 2011-W American Eagle Silver Uncirculated Coin. Last fall, 184,967 orders were placed during the inaugural weekend when the initial price was $60.45 each. Neither uncirculated coin had household limits or published maximum mintages. The one thing the older strike had going for it was two years of pent-up anticipation since the uncirculated Eagles were not produced in 2009 and 2010.

As for the next best numismatic sellers, the 2012-W American Eagle Silver Proof Coin tacked on 21,288 to move its total up to 548,094 after adding 34,061 previously, and the 2012 Proof Set increased by 10,467 to hit 480,896 in this round. In the prior report, collectors purchased 12,391 Proof Sets.

Authorized Purchasers kept a decent pace with the prior week. The American Eagle Silver bullion coin rose by 765,000 in seven days compared to 610,000 in the prior seven days. The one-tenth ounce American Gold Eagles picked up 5,000 versus 15,000 in the last report, and the next largest gainer was the one ounce Gold Eagle with 3,500, but its prior increase had been 7,500.
