Beginning on August 27, 2012 at noon ET, 2012 Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park Quarters enter circulation and debut in several United States Mint coin collecting products.
Hawaii Volcanoes quarters are the fourth issue this year and the fourteenth overall since the America the Beautiful Quarters series debuted in 2010. Reverses depict an eruption on the east rift of Kilauea Volcano. Inscriptions are HAWAI’I VOLCANOES, HAWAII, 2012 and E PLURIBUS UNUM.
While a scheduled quarter ceremony will not officially introduce Hawaii Volcanoes quarters to the public until August 29, 2012 the United States Mint will begin selling five coin collecting products featuring varying quantities of them.
The following breakdown provides the products by type and price.
New Coin Collecting Products with Hawaii Volcanoes Quarters
|U.S. Mint of Origin||Price|
|40-Coin Roll||San Francisco||$18.95|
|100-Coin Bag||San Francisco||$34.95|
|Two-Roll Set||Philadelphia & Denver||$32.95|
In the products above that list Philadelphia and Denver as the United States Mint or origin, the coins are the same as Hawaii Volcanoes quarters released into circulation. They simply offer collectors a means to get the coins quickly and perhaps in better condition since they will not have been exposed and hit against other circulating coins.
The listed San Francisco quarters in circulating quality are unique to this year. As the linked article describes in more detail, these quarters carry the "S" mint mark and are not released into circulation like those from Philadelphia and Denver. The U.S. Mint is striking them specifically for coin collectors and at lower mintages — enough to fulfill collector demand.
Because each coin collecting product is sold directly by the U.S. Mint to the public, they also have U.S. Mint-branded numismatic packaging. Some collectors prefer this as well as compared to normally wrapped coin rolls given to banks, grocery stores, etc. United States Mint coin rolls have the name "Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park;" the abbreviation "HI" for Hawaii; "$10," the value of its contents, and "P," "D" or "S" for the mint of origin. Each canvas bag has a tag with "Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park," "HI," and "P," "D" or "S."
