Harrison Dollars Lead US Coin Collecting Product Sales

Several newly released coin collecting products from the United States Mint made their debut on the weekly sales chart.

2012 Benjamin Harrison Presidential dollars took the spotlight while 2012-P Acadia coins drove up demand for the America the Beautiful Five Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coin series.

Rolls, bags, and boxes of Harrison Presidential dollars were released on Thursday, August 16, and by Monday, August 20, buyers ordered 3,418,150 coins. Broken out, the best sellers were the $25 rolls from Philadelphia at 29,839 followed by the rolls from Denver at 27,733. Together their coin total was 1,439,300. The 250-coin boxes were pretty popular too. Boxes from Philadelphia outnumbered those from Denver — 4,794 to 1,705 — for an even larger combined total of 1,624,750 coins.

Besides the Harrison $25 coin rolls, three other coin collecting products outsold the 2012-P Acadia National Park Five Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coin. They were the 2012 Proof Silver Eagles with sales of 9,542, the 2012 Proof Set that jumped by 9,144 and the Making American History Coin & Currency Set, which added 6,769 to its total.

As mentioned in an earlier news article, inaugural sales of the Acadia silver coin reached 6,552 between its launch on Monday, August 13 through to August 20. Its debut was slightly stronger than the two earlier issues in the series. When the Chaco Culture coin began in July, collectors scooped up 6,365 of them, and beginning sales of the El Yunque coin hit 6,514 in early June.

Acadia’s debut drew attention to the other available America the Beautiful Five Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coins. Each of them had sales increases that were greater than the prior round. Of the 58 U.S. Mint numismatic products that outsold their previous gains, seven of those were the collectible five ounce silver coins.

Not to be overshadowed, two of the Mint’s coin collecting products hit major milestones in this round. First, the 2012 Proof Set crossed the 500K marker to land at a total of 502,562 sets sold since May 7. Second, the proof Infantry Soldier Silver Dollar overtook 100K by attaining 100,186 in sales since debuting on February 16.

The first three columns of the table provide weekly United States Mint sales increases between the listed time periods, offering a sense of recent trends. The last column provides the latest United States Mint sales totals as of Monday, August 20. Bullion coin tables are found toward the bottom, with the most recent sales as of Wednesday, August 22, except for the America the Beautiful Silver Bullion Coins, which have sales as of August 20.
