The first two product releases of 2012 debuted on the United States Mint sales chart this week. The 2012 America the Beautiful Quarters Silver Proof Set took the top spot, and the Vicksburg Five Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coin followed.

Opening sales for the 2012 Quarters Silver Proof Set hit 61,181 during the first week, which was not a bad start considering the program is in its third year. 2010 was the inaugural year and over 75,000 silver sets sold in the first three days, while more than 78,000 of last year’s sets sold during its initial reporting period. Oddly, the US Mint did not provide the starting figure for last year’s release until after it had been on the market for 28 days.
The five ounce Vicksburg silver coin was the second best seller. It was released on Thursday, January 12, and by Tuesday, January 17, collectors bought 7,861 of the coins. Its opening number was slower than any of the previous issues in the series, and it fell behind the 8,662 start in November for the Olympic Five Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coin.
An update on the Mount Hood silver coin showed its sales lacked 72 orders from hitting its ultimate 27,000 maximum. The coin officially sold out on Wednesday, January 11, but it is possible that returns and other such issues kept it from reaching the potential limit.
As for the 2011 Silver Proof Set, its sales numbers were not mentioned in the latest sales report from the US Mint. Typically, the Silver Proof Set is a top 10 seller, and previously it climbed by 1,782.
Another 575,000 bullion Silver Eagles were ordered by the US Mint’s Authorized Purchasers during the week, and that tilted the month-to-date sales beyond five million. As of Wednesday, January 18, the total number of investment quality Silver Eagles sold was 5,172,000.
