2009 Lincoln Proof PenniesThe US Mint in a typical year offers Lincoln proof cents in two coin products. 2009, however, is far from a typical year for the penny given it is the 200th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln’s birth and the 100th anniversary of the Lincoln cent itself.

Not only are there four new one-cent reverse designs this year to celebrate the historical occasions, but there are four different 2009 proof set products that the US Mint has produced for coin collectors.

The proof sets offer varying coin denominations within each, and the included cents are special not just for their four designs but for their unique composition. Unlike the circulating varieties, each...

Low mintages, not rare coins

by Coin Values on August 31, 2009

in Coin Values

2008 was a low mintage year for Kennedy half dollars with 1.7 million produced at each of the Philadelphia and Denver Mints. But does this mean that they're instant rarities?

They were produced for circulation and sold to collectors and dealers directly from the Mint in rolls and bags, and there is sufficient supply to meet demand. They can be purchased from dealers for around...

The economy is down, the price of gold is up and I've got a kid who needs to go to college someday. So one hot Sunday afternoon, I did what any sensible working stiff might do: I rented a metal detector and hit Coney Island.

For years, I'd seen leathery old men scanning the sand with their wands, and I'd heard tales of treasure hunters finding Rolexes gone missing on the beach...

The Mint said Friday that it was looking for up to six new artists to be designers in its Artistic Infusion Program.

That’s a good thing.

The new designs that have been created in the last 10 years for the various quarter programs, the nickel redesign and the current four commemorative designs on the cent will be the evidence that future generations will examine to determine what...

If the Downtown Development Association’s newest Go Local Lincolnton effort “Strange Change” catches on there will be a lot more dollar coins and $2 bills in circulation locally. DDA wants Lincolnton residents to show their support of locally owned businesses by using dollar coins and $2 bills.

“The dollar coin and $2 bill are perfect for this gesture of support,” said Brad Guth, DDA Director. “They are not in wide circulation so they are special when you get them. And now in Lincolnton they will come to symbolize support for local business.”...

I am an avid coin collector and owner of Legacy Numismatics, LLC, located in Doctors Inlet, Fla., just a few miles from Jacksonville. As a retailer of coins from around the globe, it has become apparent to me that the United States Mint is falling way behind in many aspects of our beloved hobby. Some of the Mints' shortfalls include innovation, technology, value, options, customer service and a serious lack of passion for the hobby.

By definition, innovation is a new way of doing something. It may refer to incremental, radical and revolutionary changes in thinking, products, processes or organizations. A distinction is typically made between invention, an idea made manifest, and innovation, ideas applied successfully (Mckeown 2008). In many fields, something new must be substantially different to be innovative, not an insignificant change.  As you visit the Web sites of The Royal Canadian Mint and The Perth Mint of Australia...

Congress is on summer break and coin and medal legislation is on hold. That’s the Washington tradition, where commemorative medals and legal tender commemorative coins are usually authorized, with few exceptions, just before the election recess in the fall – and then in the waning hours of the first session.

So far, coin bills being considered are many, but there has been little floor action. Medals are more plentiful – also traditional– but seven pieces of legislation have already been to the floor of one chamber or the other, Senate or House.

Floor action on coins and medals so far...

August 29, 2009

As the money that funded an unprecedented explosion of professional archaeology during the economic boom years runs [...]
