Congressman Wants Nickel Replaced with Half-Dime – Coin News

Oklahoma congressman Frank Lucas introduced new coin legislation Thursday that would replace the circulating Jefferson nickel with a smaller and lighter five-cent coin, once known as a half-dime.

The text of the bill, H.R. 6942, has not yet been published by Government Printing Office (GPO), but insights into its intent may be gleaned from an article and Lucas statement by David Owen of The New Yorker in March:

Gentlemen -

I strongly agree that the half dime be introduced to replace the costly 5-cent nickel ASAP.

You have my (and several colleagues) full support for this legistration.

Also, the penny should ultimately be eliminated immediately after the Lincoln commemoratives are coined. (I recently saw several pennies laying on the sidewalk in front of our small Candor, NY Post Office. It’s like – who cares. Even young kids don’t even bother to pick them up…)
