When the British Royal Mint took a sampling of the £1 coins in circulation five years ago during 2003 the mint concluded about 1 percent of the circulating “round pounds” was a counterfeit. This was of little concern when compared to counterfeit coins elsewhere.
The BRM once again has sampled the £1 coins in circulation. This time it appears the number of counterfeits in commerce has doubled, indicating perhaps as many as one in every 50 £1 coins in commerce is now bogus.
