Alternative currencies such as the European Union’s euro and Japan’s yen are becoming increasingly popular to hold rather than dollars in many places, but not in the former Soviet socialist republic of Turkmenistan.

Turkmenistan is an unusual place. It is one of several despotic regimes that rose from the ashes of the Soviet Union during the 1990s. Inflation has been a watchword through two regimes.
