But what about 2010 proof American Gold Eagles?

As a reminder, the 2009 versions of these numismatic coins were canceled as the United States Mint focused its resources and available coin blank or planchet supplies on producing bullion coins.

During the hearing, U.S. Mint Director Ed Moy spoke of his support for legislation that would redirect a portion of silver planchets from legally mandated bullion coins to discretionary proof and uncirculated silver dollars. (Read Proof Silver Eagles Possible.) Subcommittee members and panelists voiced no opposition in amending current law to make them possible.

"Such a change would be one of the most positive customer satisfaction measures that could be taken to benefit your coin collecting constituents without having an effect on American’s ability to acquire investment-grade silver bullion," Moy testified.

Of everything the U.S. Mint sold, there were only four that managed to do better than the prior report, and those not improve by much. Bullion coins, however are still in demand.

Bullion American Silver Eagle coins climbed to bring July's total to 1,648,000, adding 772,500 since July 7. The gain was soft compared to the higher 875,500 increase during the first week of the month. Still, the addition caused this year's tally to cross the 2008 end-of-year total. 2010 Silver Eagles sales are at 19,816,500 while 2008's ended with 19,583,500. Last year's record sales of 28,766,500 is now less than 9 million away, although most collectors would probably like to see a decline so that the Mint has enough supply to strike proof and uncirculated versions.
Among the many highlights, new coin releases such as the Abraham Lincoln Commemorative Silver Dollar and the four redesigned 2009 Lincoln Cents are sure to be recalled by anyone even slightly familiar with the hobby.

The sharp US Mint June coin production increases may further jog the memory, reminding collectors of the historically low mintage levels in 2009. For the entire year, just 3,548,000,000 circulating coins were produced.

In comparison, 2008 had a production total of more than 10.1 billion and 2007 came in even higher over 14.4 billion. In fact, the last time the US Mint had circulating strikes at such a low level was forty-plus years ago.

With the 2009 coin production standing at a mere 34.98% of the previous year, it beckons one to research the numbers a bit further. In doing so, and as has been pointed out before on CoinNews...

They were hot. The Mint’s entire mintage of 450,000 single coins sold out in six weeks. Broken out between the two options issued, 325,000 proof and 125,000 uncirculated coins were scooped up by collectors.

50,000 proof dollars were kept in reserve for the Lincoln Coin and Chronicles Set, which was attractively packaged to also include proofs of the four redesigned 2009 Lincoln cents with their special 95% copper compositions. The sets debuted on October 15, 2009 and sold out in 30 hours, adding up to the 500,000 authorized Lincoln commemorative coin limit ...

Known as the America the Beautiful 5 oz Silver Bullion Quarter Coins, these pieces are an extension of the circulating America the Beautiful Quarters™ Program, also from the U.S. Mint.

In these programs, sites were selected from each state, the District of Columbia and the five territories of the United States to be honored on the coins.(...)
Read the rest of America the Beautiful 5 oz Silver Bullion Quarter Coins (1,231 words)

United States Mint numismatic coin sales rose in a few areas last week, but Monday’s record gold prices and near $19.50 an ounce level for silver naturally draws investors and collectors more toward gold and silver bullion coins.

The U.S. Mint updated sales figures for those coins Thursday morning, and a few areas draw attention:

American Silver Eagles are a stone’s throw away from 18 million in sales this year, jumping 809,000 since last Wednesday, June 16, for 2,533,500 this month. Last year’s annual record of 28.7 million is clearly within reach. The pace, however, will have to pick up for June to surpass the 3,636,500 sold in May — the highest monthly level since 1986.

1 oz American Gold Eagle bullion coins just topped 600,000. 34,000 more were added since last Wednesday, bringing June’s total to 79,500. The one ounce size is now competing with the three smaller 2010 fractional Gold Eagles. Those were released June 3 and now stand at a combined 339,500 for coins leaving Mint doors. Buyers have ordered 132,500 ounces of the four eagles this month. That already places June into the second best of month 2010.
