Daniel Frank Sedwick, LLC announces the release of their new mail-bid Treasure Auction #4 by catalog and internet. The auction closes November 6. Highlights of this sale include:
- A California Gold Rush-era gold ingot from the S.S. Central America (1857) estimated at $125,000+ and also a gold bar marked with the “En Rada” stamp (Peña-Randa) from the Atocha (1622) estimated at $40,000+;
- The “Golden Fleece wreck” (ca. 1550) Special Research Collection of Mexican Charles-Joanna rarities (including the famous 3 reales of 1536 estimated at $10,000+ and many of the finest specimens of the first issues struck in the New World), as well as gold “finger” bars and silver “splash” ingots from the same wreck;

Ancient Portuguese Shipwreck of Gold, Coins and Treasures to be Saved - Coin News

Geologists hunting for diamonds instead recently discovered a 500-year old Portuguese shipwreck filled with silver and gold coins, copper ingots, cannons and other valuable artifacts off the Namibia, African coast.
“The vast amounts of gold coins would possibly make this discovery the largest one in Africa outside Egypt,” said Francisco Alves, a Lisbon-based maritime archaeologist.

Gold-laden shipwreck will be raised next week - Sowetan

A gold-laden, 500-year-old Portuguese shipwreck discovered by chance off Namibia will be salvaged by the end of next week. This is according to the ministry of culture in Lisbon, Portugal. A team of archaeologists from Portugal, the United States and Zimbabwe are working to raise the wreck before October 10 — the deadline set by Namibian government officials owing to huge costs involved.

U.S. firm rebuts Spanish charges over $500 mn treasure haul - Trading Markets

U.S. treasure-hunting firm Odyssey Marine Exploration denied Spanish government claims that it “secretly” scoured the ocean floor to find a wreck containing a $500 million haul of colonial-era coins. “Odyssey in this case followed all the appropriate archaeological and legal protocols,” Odyssey CEO Greg Stemm told Efe, calling allegations to the contrary false and “inflammatory.”
Spain’s Culture Ministry on Tuesday accused Odyssey of carrying out “this underwater excavation in secret after having received specific instructions that it was prohibited.”

Spain thinks shipwreck treasure is hidden in Gibraltar - Gibraltar News

The Spanish Government thinks that part of the treasure discovered by the Odyssey company is hidden in Gibraltar, possibly in a warehouse in the port area.
It will be recalled that last year, gold and silver coins were found by Odyssey at sea and flown from Gibraltar to the USA. The Spanish have lodged a claim, while Peru have now also done the same. Part of that haul is said to still be in Gibraltar, hidden away somewhere.

Coin Treasure Claim from Peru Over “Black Swan” Shipwreck - Coin News

The Republic of Peru on Tuesday entered the legal fray between Odyssey Marine Exploration and Spain over a 17-ton booty of Colonial-era silver and gold coins discovered at a shipwreck site Odyssey code-named the “Black Swan.”
That legal dispute started back in May of 2007 after Odyssey — a Florida based treasure hunting, and deep-sea exploration firm — hauled up over 500,000 silver and gold coins from a 17th-century shipwreck site found on the Atlantic sea floor.

Spain says it’ll share disputed treasure trove with Peru - Thaindian News

Spain has said it is ready to share with Peru a disputed treasure trove worth millions of dollars salvaged from a shipwreck, claiming it is a part of its cultural heritage, EFE news agency reported. The vessel which was apparently carrying coins worth some $500 million was sunk in 1804. US treasure hunting firm Odyssey Marine Exploration spotted the vessel and its treasure off the coast of Portugal.

NGC Releases SS New York Population Report

A comprehensive population report of all the NGC-graded gold coins from the SS New York is now available. The SS New York operated a light cargo and passenger service between New Orleans and Galveston until it sank during a storm on September 7, 1846.
Coins recovered were conserved by Numismatic Conservation Services (NCS) and then certified by NGC. The newly released population report includes 297 gold coins representing a broad cross-section of coins used in commerce along Gulf of Mexico trade routes during the early nineteenth century.

This mail-bid auction surpassed predictions by grossing over $800,000 ($700,000 + 15%), with an unprecedented 92%+ of the lots sold.
Consignments for Sedwick’s next auction (Treasure Auction #4) in the fall of 2008 are already pouring in. One of the top highlights of the sale was a rare mariner’s astrolabe that sold for $28,750.00 (with buyer’s premium). Other major highlights include a Lima, Peru, cob 8 escudos of 1703 that sold for $17,250 and a Cartagena, Colombia, cob 2 escudos of 1622 (the first gold coin struck in the New World) that sold for $23,000 (both prices with buyer’s premium).

Peru group jumps into Odyssey and Spain treasure battle - CoinNews

The Association of Peruvian Consumers and Users (ASPEC) requested the Peru government to join the legal battle between Odyssey Marine Exploration and Spain over the sunken treasure trove of silver and gold coins discovered last year.
Ownership of the 17-ton treasure found by Odyssey in May of 2007 is worth several hundred million, and has been hotly contested.

Florida-based treasure hunting, deep-sea exploration firm Odyssey Marine Exploration is back in court this morning at 9:30 a.m. (ET) with Spain. The legal battle over 17-tons of silver and gold Colonial-era coins continues in U.S. Federal court before Magistrate Judge Mark A. Pizzo.
The coin treasure trove was recovered by Odyssey in May of 2007, and resulting legal disputes with Spain over ownership have resulted since.

A battle royale over an estimated $500 million treasure that a Florida deep-sea salvage company found last year is due for a fresh round in court in Florida on Monday.
The Spanish government now says the 500,000 silver and gold coins that the company, Odyssey Marine Exploration, found last year in the Atlantic Ocean near Spain came from one of its ships that sunk in a 19th-century naval battle. Spain wants the entire treasure returned, but Odyssey insists Spain may have no right to it.

Odyssey Marine Exploration Files Admiralty Arrests on Two Shipwreck Sites

Tampa, FL - May 29, 2008 - Odyssey Marine Exploration, Inc. (NasdaqCM: OMEX), the world leader in the field of deep-ocean shipwreck exploration, today filed Admiralty Arrest Complaints in the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Florida on two separate shipwreck sites recently discovered by the Company.
Both sites lie within the general area of the English Channel but are outside the territorial waters or contiguous zone of any sovereign nation. The sites both contain cannon and other artifacts which are believed to date from the Colonial period. Odyssey has conducted preliminary surveys but has not yet been able to confirm the identity of either site. Gold coin hoard will sell quickly - Coin Values

Hearing of a “hoard” of coins conjures up images of surplus, oversupply and the uncommon that suddenly becomes common. This happened in 1962 when hundreds of thousands of the formerly rare Mint State 1903-O Morgan dollars surfaced in the form of $1,000 canvas bags of silver dollars that had been locked in a vault at the Philadelphia Mint since 1929.
The values of the previously few known Uncirculated examples of the 1903-O Morgan dollar quickly plummeted from between $1,000 and $2,000 each all the way down to about $25.
